--> anyone heard this guy? i find it really amazing. he has had loads of mental health problems over the years but its still about sometimes. better than bob dylan imo.

i just saw the dvd - the devil and daniel johnston. its crazy. that mans life is crazy.

he was once flying back from a gig in his dads plane (he was like 35 at this point and had just come out of a mental hospital) and he was reading a casper the friendly ghost comic. on the front was casper parachuting so he said to his dad that he wanted to do it. his dad said they didn't have any parachutes, so daniel johnston got angry, turned the engine off and threw the keys out the window. his dad had to crash land in a load of trees. the funniest thing is the pics of him afterwards, he has a massive smile on his face as he things he did a good thing.

anyway, you should watch the dvd, or watch some of his stuff on youtube, he really is amazing.

i loved the film.
a moving portrait of someones decline in mental health.

but his music i find cloying. it seems too hip / faux-naive for me.
most vocals irritate me though.

too hip ?? only because people having been biting on him without knowing it... He's the king of manipulative emo...

I totally and utterly agree with monty.

doubt you'd feel that way 10 or more years ago...

but also some people can only listened to "talented" musicians... my mom's got that problem..

i heard daniel johnston ten years ago. blew my mind. it did sound different before the flood of whispery glocks drowned everything in sepia.

Fredo .. did you see my link on the last page .. you might like that more..

I do agree that there is a certain "fakeness" to Daniel but it's just to develop a character he can play off with (Laurie is his muse .. not his true love)... Jad Fair does that too,.. lots of my favorite artists do.

Either way .. I go in and out of phases with Daniel .. but "My Yoke is Heavy" will always mean something to me... maybe I just like the word "gloom".

oh, man, it's cool. to each his own. At this point I have gone in and out of love with so many singers and composers, etc... It's good to know folks still get enthusiastic, and obviously it's best when they are enthusiastically POSITIVE about sumthin!
btw, 10 years ago I was obsessed with Russian classical: mussorgsky, shostakovich, stravinsky, and I'm probably much more open-minded today actually.

Do you happen to have a copy of Koussevitzky's bass concerto?? I'll give you monies!! ;)

haven't heard it since Jr. High .... major major major influence of mine.. can't ever find it..

I haven't gotten into Koussevitsky, don't think I've ever heard a piece of his. Would you recommend him? Is it like Khachaturian?

Koussevitsky Concerto 3 on YouTube:

Movement 1 - link
Movement 2 - link
Movement 3 - link

I've got a copy, but it's only double bass & piano, no orchestra. Em-mail if you're interested.

Koussevitsky is a local Boston hero, btw.
