dear diary,
ok, i've played like a lot of shows, but i still get nervous every time. and i think it's worse when i play here, cause i know people have seen me play before and i know my set consists of a lot of the same songs every time (albiet different every time but still most elements are the same). i wish i could make new songs more quickly so that i would have some f-f-fresh trax in there. also, i keep trying to make things more and more triggerable when in reality i am realizing i should just stop where i am now in that respect and focus on tweaking effects more and and stage presence and stuff. and of course, the more i think about this the more nervous i get. and i wish i could get drunk to calm the nerves, but since i've made my set so trigger dependant i would f*ck everything up royally and that would be a bad thing. i think i need to stop playing shows for awhile and make new music so i will at least feel like i'm bringing something new to the table.
yours truly,
jen

and thanks oscar!
i didn't mean this to turn into a thread about how my show went. it's awesome to read that i'm not alone and that other people stress about playing the same stuff and that people like hearing the same stuff.

I find new tracks come with life experience, If my time in seattle was any indication, you're all over the place and in that sense live more than anyone I know. Don't sweat it...they'll come. Just don't be frustrated...remember the feelings you had when you started making music and what got you into it, that's always a jumping off point for me.
congrats on the good reception at the last gig.

i always found that if i wasn't nervous before a show, it either didn't go well or was just kind of ho-hum. nerves are what help us ride to the occasion and kick some ass for all to see!

According to wikipedia
link
The dude who may have been in FLA whose name starts with a D is...
DEVIN TOWNSEND????
somehow I think he'd say "I'm in the Devin Townsend band" before saying "I was in FLA", but who knows!
He has NOT lost his goth appeal
Video
maybe you met Lowlifi, no wait he was in Sister Machine Gun wasn't he?

cut the chatter.
When you hear your own voice in your head asking all of these "what-ifs" and speaking all kinds of negativity, that's the chatter. Gotta kill it. Tell it to shut up. Blow it up with a mental Death Star blast or ass kick it with a pair of mental steel-toe boots.
just go out there and do your thing. Ppl will LOVE it.

i quit playing out a while ago. i only do the once in a while thing. i kept going to the same places in my audiomulch sets. need to work out a new live set up.
so frn.. just go w/your gut. i know people dig your sets and have fun so thats a nice reward in itself. i'm always excited to hear new stuff though.. but i'm sure there's always going to be someone at your gig who hasn't heard you before so even if the song is 'old' to you it's new to them. have fun

haha. i will challenge my inner self to a duel. i WISH i could play stuff new everytime, but i think this music isn't conducive to that (as in i think it would get boring) but on the rare occasion i play ambient shows i've never repeated anything, and that's pretty fun. i am going to take a break and work on new things, but then again i've said that before. in any case i have to make a song in the next week or so for a comp, so there's one.
i think it was this guy- link but he was bald and had a beard so i'm not sure. i know for sure it wasn't devin townsend, so i guess i was wrong about the d.

Stop worrying about what you 'should' do.. do what you FEEEEEEEEEEEEL like doing.
last time i did a show, i was nervous for about a month in advance.. it was rediculous. I lost sleep a lot. then when i actually played the show i stopped being nervous about 15 minutes before i went on.

Maby just play a bunch of shows with a lot of rad people. You'll pick up some of their style, like - Gameboy Keyboard behind the back, thats a good crowd drooler.
Or add some shades to increase ninja pimposity potential.
But no matter the makeup or moves all us fanboys still <3 your tunes!

yo jen. well i know your sets rock. and you do. so what you got to worry about? like we are all humans running about. and some of us make music, and we get jiggy to other peoples tunes and that.
i got paid some quantity of money tonight for playing a set i have been tweaking for a year. the thing is you might have heard the set a million times, but to the people there its new, and fresh to their ears, and you have spent AGES making it, tweaking it and making it good. so take money, have beer, run.
i really like playing out. and if anyone stopped me i would cry. in some countries we wouldn't be able to even contemplate playing music to people so thank the blessed lord/lordess of techno/breaks/iiddmm/whatever and count yerself lucky ducky.
i get to support headcleaner on monday - he the donn.

jen,
i didn't read all the posts here, and people have already probably said this to you, but here goes: you RAWK. (that's an incomplete sentence, but in the world of RAWKNESS, proper sentence structure has little clout.) AND, being nervous about performing is a good thing, as it keeps you aware and just a little on edge , which gives you keen senses needed for a spot-on performance. just as long as the nervousness isn't debilitating leading you either down the way of NOT-PERFORMING or performing not up to par, either because of self-medication (alas a drunk bob dylan is NOT a good performer), or because of over-compensation (e.g. axl rose's apparent 9 costume changes in a single performance). cheers to you. and keep on RAWKIN'!
