I highly suggest that everybody see Children of Men.
It's one of the most emotionally potent movies I've ever seen and certainly the best depiction of guerrilla violence I've ever seen dramatized.
Absolutely brilliant.

I loved it too. The low angle steadycam shots really trap you in the war zone with the characters...i swear i had to get a shoulder massage after seeing it because i was so tense the whole time.
I read an interview with the director, Alfonso Cuarón, and he basically said that it's really easy/lazy for a director to just set up a half dozen cameras, shoot a ton of film and throw the whole wad at your editor....that wielding the camera is and should be part of the art of directing. I think that's awesome and very commendable. I am constantly suprised to find just how few directors in hollywood even touch the camera.

mechp,
The funny thing is that steadycam and the constantly moving shot is just as much a lazy way out in hollywood. You learn this by watching two hours of c-grade scifi network programming. Cuarón is right about directors who just set up a thousand cameras, but the art of careful coverage is one that has grown quite rare since steady-cam operators can just move all around a set and get it all in one take. To do that well is something else, of course. But it can also be a sign of laziness.

I was gonna mention that freesound smapple, I was the one that spotted it! Can't believe the freesounders hadn't realised it had been used yet - I suppose as a sound editor dude you're probably too busy cutting in the thousandth bullet into flesh hit to email someone thanks.

Fredo,
I guess I never thought about it like that. I could definately see how steady camming everything is just as lazy as over-coverage. In the film I think it was done tastefully and it certainly is appropriate for the tone of the film IMO.

saw it tonight, was disappointed. not utterly disappointed, but yah. that scene sure is sweet, but the rest of the film moved at too slow a pace without actually diving into anyone's character. sure, the anatomy of resistance movements is shown, especially the power struggle and instrumentalisation of people.. but eh. not a bad film, but not a very good one either in my book. i liked V for Vendetta more. :p

i guess i just don't see the big difference between the two..there's a lot of details in Children of Men that just kill it for me.. mainly it's the zero characterisation and constant commotion.. but hey, yeah, also the premise is a bit off. just the way the viewer learns about the youngest child being 18 via TV News etc.. it just feels so standard fare. i could also compare to "The Fortress" with Christopher Lambert? :p

maybe it's just that after seeing parts of the long steadycam scene here I was expecting this to be more of an action movie. the social bits just didn't ring that well with me, maybe oversaturation has set in.
