weren't they supposed to have scientists and the works? maybe i misunderstood that part. the whole nativity story aspect of it just rubs me the wrong way...I'll shut up about it, my expectations were over the top after reading this thread and seeing the _very cool_ action sequence. and yes, I like heady movies usually. Babel left me just as unimpressed btw.

there are perfect dystopian movies out there- i'm thinking of delicatessen, in particular. and friggin blade runner. brazil!

think about how long blade runner is, esp the director's cut.

children of men had such a ramp at the end, it struck me as uneasily balancing between an action movie and a drama. i just wanted it to get stttttrreetched out a touch. and the whole movie is so human, i don't think it would have pulled the punch at the end to see the "human project". seemed like a last minute editorial decision to leave it as a symbol.

To dive into the details of the human project would have been silly after reaching such a lovely emotional climax, imo. Perhaps what would have made that ending work is if they had other wildly symbolic touches throughout the film. It was just like suddenly we were in a different kind of film... a dream film... I had the same problem with Breaking the Waves. The whole thing is so realistic, to suddenly click into dreamy-symbol-land just stuck out like a sore thumb.

definitely hear you on the eisenstein/tarkovsky. To me the end has that dreamy quality you find in a tarkovsky film, where it's obviously post sync and the sound is somehow disconnected from the handheld video... I think it would have been a much more powerful film. Is there definitely going to be a director's cut of this film???

i would think there would be, don't know for sure of course. seems like they didn't anticipate what a success this was going to be, and so there probably was pressure to edit it down (i think people are generally getting tired of spending 3 hours in a theater-not me!).

Ouch, I drove about 20 min. to show this film to a friend and his girlfriend. They pretty much ridiculed it all the way through . . . wanting me to defend the movie I just simply said it expressed the capacity of compassion within' humanity in even the most hopeless of situations. I refused to debate it further...

Either way, this was an amazing piece of film making . . . candid shot into so many aspects of what it is to be human. I feel I should question those who thought it sucked...but meh, to each his/her own...
