About me
I've been making electronic music on my PCs and Macs since 1997, always striving to further develop the crafts of synthesis, electro acoustic instrumentation, and composition. I don't perform. Doing laptop shows isn't for me. In addition to the work under my own name, I create fake MTV/Justin Timberlake style music under the name Tommy Shane. Visit my homepage at link to download my latest release, and a bunch of old ones, for free.

Electronic Music discussion: MP3 software recomendations?
Store
Written January 13 2007 , Tags: MP3 compression
Last month there was a very useful thread about the best software for compressing audio to MP3. I recall there was a consensus. Unfortunately, I can't find the blog now. Can somebody please tell me the name of that program. Perhaps there are several others I didn't read about that are of equal quality. If so, I'd like to know about those too.
Thanks.

Lame is really the only way to go. If you run windows, I recommend razorlame link as a frontend, althought it's certainly not required. just makes things easier, especially for when working with batches of files.

as mrpanda said... lame + razorlame is a good combo. lame produces quality mp3s at 192, and razorlame is a god-send for batch jobs. the only thing missing is an auto-tagger.
i've also heard good things about fraunhofer. anyone have experience with it?

I'm afraid not, but here's a pretty good piece of freeware for batch conversions:

also, u can wrap a shell script in applescript, make an application out of it, and bundle that as a contextual menu...
i've seen it done with other things.. im just not smart enuf to figure that out.

Thanks guys.
I just started doing some test compressions with Lame. Specifically, I used the LameBrain front end. The quality is far beyond what I've heard from comparable sized MP3s.
How do you guys think Lame MP3 compression stacks up against Apples AAC format?
