--> for the most part i've loved every autechre record from the get go. and most of them at one time or another became albums that just grew and grew on me and still reveal new sounds and info all the time. things i didnt hear even after listening for years etc.

draft 7.30 was one that i listened to for a while then put away then one day put on and it sounded just amazing to me.

today i had that same experience w/confield. i appreciated it when i first got it but never jelled with it. today, now, i feel like i can finally "hear" the record and it's awesome. it's like a new release i get to enjoy when there is no new autechre record out.

there aren't too many other artists i have this kind of experience with but it makes me question my initial impressions of music. what if i really like happy hardcore and just don't know it yet? just kidding of course but you know what i mean.

you people have similar experiences w/any other records? i know there's more music like this.. some jazz and out there stuff... but a lot of that i know that i like right away or i just totally hate it w/every atom in my body.

I have exactly the same relationship with post-EP5 Autechre. I took me a while to really appreciate those records. I dunno if I'm ever gonna get 'untilted' though. It was a dissapointment and it still is, even though there are a few tracks on it I dig.

Other than that, it's mostly classical music that can grow on me for years like that. Especially 20th century not-so-consonant classical music. But also the complex counterpunctal music of the baroque. I remember when I first got a grip on what counterpoint really is. That was enlightenment!

And Squarepusher... didn't like "do you know squarepusher" or "go plastic" at first, now I love them both.

leonid: i couldn't get into squarepusher as many itmes as i've tried (many times). anyone else here hate squarepusher?

edit: he plays a mean bass guitar tho, i like that

edit2: link

(OT)

Collab I'd like to see: Squarepusher and Terry Riley, since the latter has been working on a spanish / arabic classical guitar project ( link (sorry, .ram))

i don't like squarepusher that much.. i like him like i like Chick Corea or something.. it can be good, but it's almost always cheesy (to my ears any ways).. he always sounds like he's trying to be cute or something.. or at least like he's trying to make a 'statement' and i hate that shit. and i'm also sick of hearing people rave about his bass playing.. nowadays, there's a ton of bassists who could play him under the table.

as far as music that took a minute for me to grasp.. mainly Coltrane.. he's so fucking advanced. It's kind of like learning another language (listening to him).. once your brain can understand it fluently, it should make you cry.. unless of course you don't have a soul.. everything else mostly hit me fast.. it seems like now, I know whether or not i'm going to like something pretty fast..

ok ... so confession time, i haven't ever reallly listend to Autechre any reccomendations where to start?

Years and years ago, in a galaxy far, far away I bought Bitches Brew. It was an album that just fucked me up, but something told me there was more to it than my first impression, and so I didn't return it. I took it out once every year for three years and played it for as long as I could stand it, and then shelved it again. At the end of the third year I tried it for the second time that year, and "HOLY SHIT!" was my reaction. It was like my brain and consciousness just opened wide to receive that music. I wasn't stoned or drunk, I just heard it! That was an amazing experience. It's happened again with other recordings since then.

i like happy ahrdcore.

but yeah, i agree with you. especially with autechre, this seem to happen all too often. never ceases to amaze me.

funny - the first autechre I heard was LP5 and immediately loved it and was totally blown away. next one I bought was Incanabula and was really disapointed. I picked up EP7 and loved it, and the Cichli Suite, love it, etc. then one day, a couple of years later, I put Incanabula on and thought it was absolutely beautiful. I also love Draft, Confeld, and Untilted, and those took me no time at all. and people never understand me when I tell them that it wasn't until like, 6 months ago...9 years after first listening to autechre...that I finally liked Amber. I find that (with other artists too) once I "click" with an album, even if it has taken years, I'm locked in.

when it comes to music, it's a good thing to force yourself to like something you normally don't or even would give the time of day.
it's taken me many listens to like every single Autechre record since Incunabula; I dont have a favorite AE record though. my least favorite is (i think) Amber.

back in the early 90s i forced myself to like My Bloody Valentine because all my peers and friends hail them as the second coming of Jesus. i personally thought they were really good, but not great or revolutionary. but i did learn alot from Loveless. it wasn't until 5 years ago that i rediscovered Loveless and it was like like a revelation; like Jesus came late for me, but came to get me and only me, you know what i mean... it was a special moment
I saw Autechre live and in their show they lost all hope of regaining control of their machines. I for one think they do too many drugs and are only brilliant when in a controlled situation.

btw: wtf is with the obsession with them???

confield was the first ae i liked.
go plastic gets better each time.
and.

I find the same is true for Britney Spears. I just didn't get into it at first, but I guess it grows on you. I totally recommend listening to her over and over. Once your brain can understand it fluently, it should make you cry.. At first I just didn't appreciate the depth and subtle details, but in fact I'm still hearing new things in there all the time. Never ceases to amaze me. My friends all thought I was weird, but it just goes to show that you can train yourself to like anything.

I'm a huge fan of the song Parhelic Triangle from the Confield album. Up front there are several percussive sounds that are lined up with a base riff to form a single complex sound. In the back is a fantastically clean sounding resonating noise that builds and evolves. It's brilliant.

Maybe some of you don't like them. I also occasionally question some of their compositional choices. But I'd like to hear someone try to effectively duplicate their sound. And I'd be absolutely thrilled to hear any music done in Max that can match or exceed the detail and complexity of what Autechre does.

I have yet to hear anyone come close, so somebody please take up the challenge and succeed. Or if you know of someone who has, please let me know. I've got to hear it.

If you listen to Yes enough times.....

Just don't go to the show. It's.......disturbing.

funny you mention this... i just had the same experience with anvil vapre the other day. i don't think i've listened to it since the late 90s. it's stilll better than alot of the new electronic music i've heard in recent years.

soundhack - cheers on bitches brew, man. that's my favorite album of all times.

most H.I.A stuff (albeit rather dated sounding using the usual roland machines) really still surprises me with its inviting warmth
