for the most part i've loved every autechre record from the get go. and most of them at one time or another became albums that just grew and grew on me and still reveal new sounds and info all the time. things i didnt hear even after listening for years etc.
draft 7.30 was one that i listened to for a while then put away then one day put on and it sounded just amazing to me.
today i had that same experience w/confield. i appreciated it when i first got it but never jelled with it. today, now, i feel like i can finally "hear" the record and it's awesome. it's like a new release i get to enjoy when there is no new autechre record out.
there aren't too many other artists i have this kind of experience with but it makes me question my initial impressions of music. what if i really like happy hardcore and just don't know it yet? just kidding of course but you know what i mean.
you people have similar experiences w/any other records? i know there's more music like this.. some jazz and out there stuff... but a lot of that i know that i like right away or i just totally hate it w/every atom in my body.

i think it's all the difference between the 'hook' and music with more depth

pen expers and parhelic triangle were my favorite tracks on that album. But bine grew on me more than anything else. I even recorded it and reversed it to see if the rythmic part was somehow backwards. It's not. That random textured rythm with the huge wailing reverbed tones send me over the edge every time.
btw, Afx's reaction to Confield was "This is the record I've been waiting for them to make for years"

my experience with Ae. I first heard them around the Basscadet time, back when it was all about the beats for me and I dug them a lot, but never seeked them out. it wasn't for a few years that I had any interest in checking them out, I was seriously into Mouse on Mars, and all that kooky German stuff.
But I got Tri repeatae and it blew my mind and I had to seek out all their work. Some of it was amazing, some not so much but never the less I became kind of obsessed with them. Their stuff was hideously expensive to get on import in Sydney at the time, but I got it all. My favorite was still Tri Repetae, Lp5 and ep 7 didn't really do it for me, and still don't, but I was awestruck by the work all the same.
Then confield was released and I didn't go for it that much, some of it I did, but mostly not. I preferred the early stuff. it was like they were just going down this inacessible road just for the sake of it.
then about 2 or 3 years later I got it. So i went and got draft 7.30 and I got that, I think it's an amazing album, really listenable, even though i've heard some people say it's thier hardest. When Untilted came out I thought it was OK, but not very progressive and not that remarkable but still a good album.
I still don't like LP5.
I wish they would tour here, they could do a big shopw here easily

It's strange. I'm not a fan, but i've got most of their material except for the gescom releases. Sometimes, i dig it, sometimes it's a little too grating. Despite what everyone says about how each album is different from the next, i don't see much difference except for incunabula vs all the rest. I've yet to experience that oprah moment.
