--> it seems highly acclaimed producer hiphop / rnb / pop producer timbaland has been doing a fitts for fight and stealing and profiting from chiptune artists work...

read the full story (and hear the stolen song in all its forms) here :
link

it seems he has played back the .sid file, muted the drum channel and sampled the c64 version wholesale, chucked his own drums over the top then taken the credit for writing it the thing is if he had sourced a similar-sized loop such from a vinyl lp you can bet the credit for sampling would be given and royalties paid. sad. i like some of tims work but this is pretty darn shady. he even sold the beat twice!

tsk. tsk. tsk.

dear god.

that seems like such an easy one for an entertainment lawyer.

it does doesn't it. i wonder if they settled out of court. "here's a $10K now shut up" sweet.

this type of thing happens more than you'd think

it's too bad the chiptunes guys dont have the beatles lawyer.

Thanks for posting this.
I am thankfully unfamiliar with Nelly Furtado and wouldn't have found out about it without this link. I saw her on tv once and looked at her, heard her sing and went, hmm must be Nepotism, changed channel.
I belong to some fashion, makeup, and exercise sites frequented by 20 something pop listening chicks and went ahead and posted the link.
So, people will be outraged like we are, right?
No. I did this before showed all these pop fans the actually places there beloved top 40 crap was ripped from, they don't care 'at least she can dance' 'shes a great entertainer' 'the remix is better' I can liken it to sports. People like to be on the side of the winning team. These people are drinking cristal on there yachts, they are getting jiggy wit it, clearly they are the winners. Look at their shiny grills.

But the other thought I had about these links was: all these unknowns who sampled long breaks from James Brown, are we outraged about that?
At what point does fame and money disqualify your work from this type of thing.
Thats another topic though.

It comes down to, what is sampling and what is straight up theft.

When the real artist of the Timbaland song doesn't sue because he was bought off ,on the boat with Puffy, using Proactiv solution, or these micronet people don't take any action, the people who are ripping sh1t off win.

Timbaland is a total hack.. rock the triton loser.

"Get Your Freak On" (sp?) is one of the catchiest beats ever IMO.

Also, I didn't think the original chiptune was very good. The Way of the Exploding Fist.sid, on the other hand, is excellent. I'll have to find some way to incorporate it into sets.

Ace of Base is catchy too ... I feel Timbalind is forgiven too much among the "musical elite". Just because you are surrounded by shit .. doesn't make you great.

He's a basketball in the ruff. Or a doll missing one eye.
i think it fine to sample people, but give them credit if it's obvious. however, ripping off an entire song is another story.

i told this guy i was going to borrow a riff off him. he got so pissed off. i couldn't understand it personally, as i wasn't gonna make money off it. just make a different version of the song. i loved the riff, i thought he would be chuffed. if i was this guy though i would go round timbalands house and steal his mpc's. better than lawyer biz.

Though I don't excuse it, I can understand why he'd want to use it. It's hot! If I'd heard that way back when I'm pretty sure I'd think it was loaded with pop flavor. Yeah, he stole it -- bastard. Like I'd never think of him as lifting shit without giving credit 'cause you know his group of lawyers would not hesitate to sue any of us into oblivion for nicking his shit. Still, though, the chip tune is perfect melody and harmony with just the right rhythmic complexity that makes for a really nice pop tune. I guess all this is evidence that Timb knows his music, and it suggests that he'd steal your rims, if not your hooptie, when you aren't looking.

What an awful thing to do... but yeah... His version sounds fucking dope. Those drums sound great over it. Very catchy song, but he should have given his props to Tempest.

Have you guys heard Trash80's EP Hologram? Poppy gameboy stuff. This reminds me of a really awesome version of that.

smarter = approach the original artist and ask permission. then make a whole album of mixit style insanity and send one to timabaland.
...? ? ok maybe that's more dumber.

drummergirl, you're absolutely right...

anyway, damn! what a shame, because the man obviously has talent... how can he reduce himself like that, i don't know... but like drummergirl said, he'll get away with it because the average listener won't care about the little unknown chip tune guy...

i don't wish the man ill, but it would be great if he apologized and gave credit where it's due. keep on making dope beats Timbaland, but stop stealing!!

At least it's not as bad as that Furgie song... it's a blatent rip-off of a Jeff Mills "the wizard" routine. insane and so much harder to call them out legally.
