we have a national broadcasting radio station here that plays mostly classical music all day and has talk shows. it's all very soothing and adulty, until midnight hits and then a show called "Brave New Waves" comes on. This show has been running since 1984, and it showcases new music that would never normally get radio play. I learned about the Stone Roses through this show, The Wedding Present, Orbital, BR, Squarepusher, and I could go on and on and on.
Now, the brilliant old men behind the CBC have decided that they are going to move their "youth oriented" shows (BNW being one of them) over to satellite radio. GREAT MOVE! Make the kids pay! That will guarantee you'll continue to have tons of listeners over the years. Everyone I know already think the CBC is completely out of touch with anyone under the age of 50, and this strongly supports that opinion.
The absolute idiocy of this infuriates me to no end, I wrote them a big rant about this story.

nothing with that much gov't invovement can be that intelligent...
my fave BNW story goes back about 15-20 yrs... i passed out while studying some really dry literature (most likely Milton - ecch) while the CBC was playing on my radio. nice soothing sounds, nothing that would ever offend anyone - that is, until Brave New Waves kicks with a (then) new track from Montreal's Dead Brain Cells (death metal par excellence a la Slayer, etc.). Scared the shit out of me. Kept me up all night.

NPR still has Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me - nothing to do with music, of course, but still one of the only radio shows I'll make time for if I have any time to waste. Really makes CDN gov't-sanctioned radio comedy (the bloody Air Farce, etc.) look even lamer than it already is.

Lame!
I tried to be more upset about this, but I still can't over the fact that someone at the CBC thinks "Royal Canadian Air Farce" is worth producing. It is without doubt the worst piece of shit sketch comedy disaster that I have ever seen. Every time it's on TV I am embarrassed to be Canadian.

Yeah but what does NPR have for kids? You may love it, but people under 40 might not.
Does canada have or have had a college radio phenomena? In the US, there's no brave new waves or peel sessions, but an endless series of college radio DJs playing independent music.

I'm not sure what it's like in the rest of Canada, but we just got our public broadcast college radio stations back in Winnipeg around 1999 or 2000. I don't remember them in their earlier incarnations when I was a wee lad, but since reappearing they're pretty much the only radio I listen to. Lots of great stuff.

that's the sh*ts about Brave New Waves. I also was introduced to some early non-mainstream acts through that show years ago.
CBC infuriates me, but also makes me laugh when they try to be 'hip'.
Then I remember that my tax dollars are paying them to be out-of-touch morons...
grr..

yes, the cbc is bum. it's a lost cause in my mind. its basically therapy for senior citizens. i lost interest in the cbc so long ago that this piece of news doesn't even bother me.
i guess if they had more money they'd make radio 3 a real station and not just a web/satellite/podcast thing. maybe there's more of a future in satellite radio than i'm aware of. but if they were more serious about grabbing the attention of a whole generation of listeners, they should've done that anyway, regardless of their budget.
