so, i am not a fan of lots and lots of trance. but i feel psy trance really does have a purpose. untill friday, i hadn't done any drugs in over a year. now im single, and feeling like partying more than i used to. so friday, i had some mdma and it pretty much didn't do anything, i was sitting in a jamming room with some guys just messing about with guitars. it was ok. a few too many hippies really but they all seemed like nice people,
but last night, i went to a psy trance rave at my local art college and took some pills. i used to go to raves a bit when i was younger, but this one i really enjoyed. the music was absolutely perfect. to be fair, i was pretty mashed, but i can appreciate psy trance for what it is. i wouldnt listen to it sober, but i cant imagine a better music for that state of mind, so i will forever, and hereafter, stop condemning psytrance. i got home and was still fucked so put on some venetian snares, some analords, some sqaurepusher, i even tried juan maclean, gramme, and some very general dance music. none of it seemed to get me going like the psy trance.
discuss.

ie elevaator music to make your brain rot. this 'euphoric trance state' bullshit id something that comes down to a few plugin presets, formulaic and cynical. is your brain that easy to control? its a lot harder to make someone dance and think (and i dont mean idm, i mean good techno) than to push some oobvious buttons in sheep heads. sorry its just wound me up. it just angers me now that america is eating up the same trance crap that this country grew out of a few years back. you guys pretty much invented house and techno and continue to produce the best and most innovative examples of that genre. i think it was phillip sherbourne that pointed out that the main reason middle america is eating up trance is because the europeans took the template and technology and took out everything that was gay and black . remember disco sucks? that was the same thing
That's precisely why 99% of trance sucks.
I think you've probably just never experienced good trance in the right setting. It facilitates complete excessive bliss.
And yes, techno is great and has a similar effect in many cases.
When you talk about things culturally like that, it doesn't make sense to me. Who cares what the Europeans did? Who cares about middle-America? I'm a human being and I like different music for different reasons. Trance happens to be very very good and making me feel very very happy. That's what I use it for.

the thing is, techno to me encompasses forward thinkin dancefloor music, music which has constantly been in flux since its inception over the last 25 years. it has light and shade and a huge range of personality with its various strands. even the toughest of techno has a light touch to it, jeff mills, carl craig and is quite self aware and referential. if you compare any nameless psy track by someone called astral mushroom or fingered pixie or whatever to something like the best of emotive techno (think knights of the jaguar or the carl craig mix of delia and gavins revelee link these tracks have a genuine arc to them, they hold back, they tease. the emotion is genuine and not driven by nostalgia or recognition of the conventions of a production style (ie build up, drums stop, increase cutoff on the lead line, snare roll breakdown, hands inthe air blah blah). christ, i get a tear in my eye when i hear these tunes at 9am on the way to work or in a club at 3am

I want to hear this good techno. Where can I get it?
I would listen to forward thinking dance music if I could actually find some.
Some of my favorite techno tracks (for dancing):
Ceephax Acid Crew - "Acid Varsity"
Audion - "Kisses"
Extrawelt - "Soopertrack"
The Advent - "C-On (Stereo Jack Remix)"
Alexander Kowalski - "So Pure"
Nathan Fake - "Outhouse"
Dub Kult - "Bells of Death"
Rave Creator - "A New Mind"
Drexciya - "Black Sea"
That's just what I've stumbled upon at Bleep.com/iTunes. I've been hard-pressed to find anything else like that.
And one thing about all that music, it lacks obvious, nostalgic melody.
Despite people's finding it "cheap", I very much enjoy uplifting trance arpeggios.
I'm not part of the beginning of any real genres, besides like, indytronica or whatever you want to call it. And I was there for the beginning of Venetian Snares-esque cut-up computer-kid music, so, I don't really know anything about dance music.

"forward thinkin dancefloor music" - how so?
"music which has constantly been in flux since its inception over the last 25 years" - many other genres have been changing since their inception
"it has light and shade and a huge range of personality with its various strands." - even hardcore has varying subgenres
"even the toughest of techno has a light touch to it" - so its not really tough at all?
"is quite self aware and referential" - are you trying to tell me music possesses consciousness? . . no dont answer that. . I know what you mean by that, but to be quite honest every style is self aware - people produce music based on what they've heard in the past. its impossible not to be self referential if you're producing the same style of music, unless by chance you happened to reinvent the style without any prior knowledge of it.
How about some real reasons why techno is so great? It just seems like percussion to me. where are the rich, complex melodies? a melody is a rhythm, only it also has an extra dimension of pitch
