i don`t want lyrics in songs. i`ve been listening to songs with lyrics for about 15 years and then i found electronic music. bang. freedom. i can hear what i want, instruments have voices and one song can mean different things in different atmospheres, nobody is crying same shit over and over again.
the thing that really gots my attention in electronic music is different timbres. melody is not the main thing (although i love when there is some ), but when i hear some sound which you can almost feel, filled with unique character, i`m gonna listen to this sound/track over and over again.

i like to listen to things that make me cry cause they are so bad ass.
so yea, i guess i listen for some kind of "emotional resonnace" as i've heard some say. something i can relate to.
or you could just say, i listen to shit that makes me feel the way i felt when i first got into coltrane or l. shankar or something...

inspiring music for me is music that makes me feel connected to being here, i sometimes feel a little lost and the music that turns that around is work that reinstates that connected feeling.

I've been on a steady diet of j dilla, madlib and pete rock instrumentals. I listen for melody amidst the smooth and gritty (older the vinyl the better). I listen for interesting sonic juxtapositions/melds in these collages.
side note: I see a change in direction coming.

It's probably corny to say 'music is a language', but that's how I feel. Listening to others' music is like exploring another person's mind. The better they are at it, the more clearly it communicates. Music can say things that words can't (and vice-versa). It's untranslatable (what'a a better word for that?), so it becomes primary experience. Comme bsr, I like it best when it makes me feel 'connected to being here' .

Here's what I like, just a brain dump:
I like things that make me have the weird nostalgia. I was very heavily medicated as a child and things tended to sound distant and ambiguous. BoC is a good example of this kind of thing. Also I was pretty crazy into the moogy music that was on the PBS shows that they used to show during the day: 2 cents worth, things like that.
I like the muffled sounds, the lowpass filters, the radically eqed things that keep them sounding lowfi.
I like repetition and depth, like the Disintegration Loops, like my music. Music that makes a space for thought, for a certain way of feeling.
I like amazing sounds, new sounds, sound, in general. I prefer sound over content nearly all the time. Mastering is very important. Not blowing my headphones with stupid loud low ends is important, too. I hate buying new headphones.
I like it when a track takes off, just blasts off into space and sounds like it is going to shake apart.
I like the sounds of actual electric Bass Guitars, sampled or no, in electronic music. With fret sounds, and passive pickups, and picks being used. I know, I know, but that's what I like.
I like alto range vocals, sung by women or men, but I really prefer women's voices to mens.
I like songs like "Tribulations" by LCD: that have a meloncholy anthem-ness to them, that I can listen to when I'm fucking killing myself in a bike race on repeat that get me to the end.
These days I really prefer music that I can get into on the first listen. I know it sucks, but the days when I'd buy a record and give it 5+ "chances" even through I didn't like it are gone... which is a shame. So it has to have some kind of a hook that will perk up my ears on first listen.
I really, really, like guitars with too much reverb, with reverse reverb, with 4 delays on them all running at 50% wet, runnng through analog filters, etc.
I don't like almost everything that I hear.

I like listening to music for the technical points if the song is boring. If the song rocks then I enjoy the energy that is pushed into me. If the song has emotion then I can get into it when the time is right. If the song sucks then I usually wonder why and pick the reason. If the song is everything i'm looking for at the time I can't do anything but listen and try to figure out where else to get more music from that artist.
I think we all should put a rhyme over that presidents day rap song on the car commercial. don, don, don don, don, don don, da don, da don, don.!
