||||Any Interest in a Toronto Laptop/Live Pa Monthly||||
As the title implies... I was PM'd the other day from a member from the Ableton board regarding gigs in Toronto... Unfortunatly the collective of which I belong to does not have room for other performers but I had been pondering the idea of starting a monthly somewhere.... Preferably lower east side in my hood Leslieville/South Riverdale/St.Lawrence...
I know here in Toronto and probably any other place it takes a bit of effort to schmooze your way into the local scene... Having an open night would give a free oppurtunity to other performers looking to hone and expose their chops...
I do have one place in mind that would probably be up for it on King St. near George Brown College... Another caveat is that in 2 months I will have to devote time to help my wife with the arrival of our new son... Having done this 17 yrs ago it does take up one's time so I would require help with this endeavour...
Any interested parties let me know...
brian.

this board is a bit buggy, brian - doesn't work like a standard bbs. are you pitching this idea on any other forums?
"
Hey Jeff I hoping the first one to go down on Fri Mar 23... The only other forums I have posted this on is ...
Ableton: not much interest... Everyone want's to talk politics, what is the best laptop, mac vs. pc.
livepa.org: fair bit of interest especially from non Toronto folks...
To others in general... Yes the venue is narrow and somewhat intimate but I would rather have a small space filled with people than a large cavernous place with limited people... If the night becomes popular then I will consider moving to another venue... I still have not even confirmed Petit Dejeneur as a venue but I should know by the end of the weekend...

great. please do keep us informed here on em411. before the overhaul, this site had a great local 'hq' section where regional discussion could go down. now, its hard to keep track of ongoing discussions like this (although i guess the 'store' function is a reasonable solution).
i'm away all of march, but would love to check 'broadcast' out in april. glad to hear things are moving forward.
small venues are great!

Is it happening tonight? I suppose if it is you aren't likely to see this before it's too late...
Ah well maybe I'll be in the area and stop in. How late?

He said he was more for something with a beat as opposed to more experimental/ambience I believe.
I'm very interested in playing, either solo see: link or my duo see: link
If it's going to happen I have to make note of it soon though, I will need all the time I can get to prepare for a live gig.
:D

As mentioned before this will be a more beat oriented event... May be open to some ambient once things are established... I have yet to hear from the venue owner to see if we can have the night... May have to source another locale... Keep you posted... ANyone going to see Booka Shade at Mod Club Mar 16?

Sorry for no updates... At the moment I am ill with some type of flu had the same thing 3 weeks ago... Heading to the docs this morning... I have try'd several times to contact Le Petit Dejuner owner via email and phone calls had no replies... I think the LPD is a bust will have to come up with another venue as soon as I have recovered from this flu..Prefer a place with it's own Pa...

Hrm, sorry to hear it cosmosuave... I've also been up and down for the last few weeks (if not months). I've missed five days in the last 4 weeks or work because of it (eek!).
Get well soon, then we can continue to bounce ideas around.

Okay Great News!!!!
I'm back from the dead from having some fucking virus for a week and I have secured Le Petit Dejeuner as venue for "broadcast's" inaugural monthly beginning Mar23 10 PM at LPD... Went there tonight to check out a private party with DJ's to see the set up... It is doable for Live Pa but not as I had hoped for....
My ideal setup would be a table big enough for 2 performers where we could fade the mixr between the two not so... We will be restricted to a 2'x6' (for you metric guys 2 ft x 6ft) table so one performer at a time with an MP3 as a backing track for intermission... Sucks but hey what can you do... The place has a nice ambiance not too big not too small... I'd rather fill a smal space than a huge cavern... Example Will Munro's Beaver Cafe Queen West, place about the same size LPD or smaller and that place gets packed... I know there are some concerns about size well lets not worry about it if we can pack it out we can look for greener pastures...Just think where else in Toronto is someone offering a Live PA monthly... Hmmm I can't think of anyone?
Technical details: Performance space is in the front window with adequate space to store some gear. Extra gear can most likely be stored in the kitchen or some other secure locale just remember you are restricted to a 2ft x 6ft table so huge modulars are out of the question... It would be nice to have setup and tear down times of 10 - 20 mins... Acoustics: there is PA with mon sends from the perfromance area and monitor hanging from the ceiling and one at the back of the house... The sound was okay but I think that renting a powered sub would round things out better...
Inaugural Night Performers:
Gorf - from this board I sent him an email yet to hear a reply..
Rajcoont - from the Ableton board he is the one that caused me to get this started so thank that mofo when you meet him...He has confirmed to play...
vveerrgg - from this board I sent him an email yet to hear a reply..
I know there were other offers to play but you will have to wait till next month as you noticed I'm not playing either but come out and represent...
Each night will consist of 3 performers from 10 PM - 2AM if we can cut down setup times we could squeeze in 4 but for the first night I don't want to push it.
I am working on an e-flyer and should have it done this week and posted at link
If you think this is worth posting on any other boards feel free to do so if you think people are interested I don't want this to come off as spam...
No cover and for performers contact me personally about just rewards and Aeroplan Miles...
As only being anew member here I would like to say thanks for your interest in this endeavour....
Brian...
