Just leave a comment stating what you think 'art' is. That is all. I find this question interesting, but perhaps the question itself is invalid. Is art even a useful word to describe anything? Is even thinking about what art is and is not a useful enterprise? If there is no fixed and generally accepted definition of what art is, can there be a natural talent for it?

well, ideally, maybe we'd all be fiercly individual without having to resort to a system of leaders/followers. this is the essence of classical democracy and republicanism.

RIGHT
ON TOPIC
um, i've felt that art has been an agitant, or a device for mental progress of the species. i wanted first to create art that helped remold the social order (usually humorously), but have gradually given up on that, and instead try to influence the development of human thought through placing certain forms in music, to try to abstract their essence and "blow peoples minds". i can appreciate and enjoy peoples efforts to make people want to dance or "chill" or whatever, but usually when i create that kind of music, it's a form of pandering or a joke.
the benefits of the ways that i think about my art are that it they have given me a fairly stable, though elastic foundation, and are pretty impervious to changes in style or outside trends
the detriments should be obvious-it's a quite amazingly egomaniacal pursuit to want to reform the world, or to think that you could possibly influence the course of human thought.

With respect, what makes you think you're not pandering? It could easily be interpreted as a rhetroical question, but it's a grave question, so therefore, I hope, doesn't appear loaded :-)
about egomanical pursuit:
Good that you show sensitivity towards that issue, as most people, most of the time, expect to see owning up to egotism, in order to respect you. But deep down, I wonder whether egomania is where it's at. Or rather, I find having to be being ashamed of egomania a bit shallow, and this idea of selfishness and selflessness might take on a new meaning under the circumstances of someone who _is_ searching. I'm quite sure you'd agree with that...unless i'm being too vague
Edit: hopefully better written

why do i think it's a better pursuit for me to be making the music i want to make rather than the music i think i'd just "be good at"? besides being more satisfying, i find that people like it better, and i'm more proud of it.
egomania is sometimes essential in art, sometimes it's horribly destructive. it's destructive to traditions, in particular, so if you find some traditions stifling or just plain wrong, you may not have very many other places to turn than your intuition.

I don't doubt it's more satisfying, or any of those other things. And I think they're good, important things. I just question whether or not that it isn't still pandering. To satisfy, to pander to..
I'm not trying to imply that all music is just entertainment, or that I think, loosely speaking, equal depth can be found in both dance music & less conforming music. Just an open question.. not really specifically aimed at you tbh
(I love your music btw :-D )
Edit: crap, punctuation
Edit 2: Not trying to double bluff you with a sychophant move there, i mean it genuinely
Edit 3: Not trying to trip you up with word conetations neither, not trying to escape anything here..
Edit 4: hopefully not being wiseass here, i'm not above any of this..in any wayduhofcourse

you know, we all have guts and I think we all have similar gut reactions, I kind of think this gets expressed in different ways depending on how relaxed we are (or not) & tensions get up, but we have the same issues at heart or troubling us and its possible to relate directly to oneanother about that, and nourishing.
oh yeah, i'm off to bed before i get permanantly branded a dickless hippy

i was proposed a fairly simple solution to this question by an old art history professor of mine. He simply said that 'art is whatever you say it is', and that response has been enough to shut me up for several years.

Art, well for starters, its a preseption thing. The mind makes art, by that I mean the imagination. But at the same time the mind interprets art.
Art reminds us of the past. Places in it, people, items. But then thats the whole life imitates art imitates life thing.
To me art is a sound that changes, but doesnt change. That evolves into something new, but with the resemblance of somthing that once was.
A seed that grows, and makes more seeds to grow once again.
Yeah, that sounds about right.
