I stand by wheat and sourdough for most purposes.
currently polishing off a loaf of pumpernickel which is lovely for meat n cheese.
when it comes to french toast, though, do the job right. you need thick slices of white - texas toast is a good choice. skimp at the clumpy peril of your own soggy, flaccid bread.
