why isn't a layout like this commonplace? is it because it costs too much to manufacture? it seems like it would help people spend more time learning theory than the fingering of the instrument itself

Crazy. I don't think enough people think about how our instruments (and what notes we can play easily on them) shape our music.

wow, that chromatone looks fun

not quite an even number of keys, but could the monome be made to trigger midi in such a fashion? link

gah there was an eastern European controller that looked like this in musicthing awhile back but I can't find it

i did find the MIDI sock puppet

i would like a midi cock-ring please invent ok byebye
crazy stuff

my uncle built a custom piano once with a different pattern of black and white keys. It was hot. and very confusing

why did he do it, luna?

was it dr moog (wasnt it?) that found it disappointing that designers would attach traditional keyboards to synths- he thought the way to play should be as revolutionary as the instruments themselves (if I remember right)
see also the buchla instruments

There was a synth released recently that used a pressure sensitive ribbon controller as the note input, so you were free to play quarter-tones, microtones, etc. I wish I could remember the name.

Someone should make and market a usb version. Though I guess midimapping the microtones would be a nightmare.

wtf edit makes a double entry?!?!
