[edit: out asshole block -- ] firstly, the sims were not networked. the sims didn't allow you to faithfully represent yourself to such a wide audience, so it's definitely different.
secondly, what happens when people start using this and things like it in such a way that it creates an entirely new paradigm... it may not, but it very well may... and in fact, looks to be heading that way..
another paradigm shift that comes to mind? ooooh, lemme think... i dunno, the internet?
JUST CALL ME DR SNARKY TONIGHT GENTZ HAHAHAHA oh and ladies too ;)

LOL @ dumb.
I just kind of dislike it because idiots like Cory Doctorho think it's the bee's knees..."OMG someone made a Second Life version of my latest crappy open source novel!!!!! I'll appear in Sekund Laff and sign it! Oh and it doesn't have DRM either!"
Seriously, can someone put that guy out of his misery? Blech.

well let's keep commenting then...
[edit: asshole text deleted AGAIN AHAHHAHA]
edit: oh right, back on topic.. i have only played second life a few times, honestly, because i got kinda bored. but lots of people have lots of fun in it. i talked to them, the computer was on. a lot of people do a lot of things while they're sitting down on a computer. it can be a little worrying when there's no physical excersize, or when real world responsibilities aren't being upheld, but for the most part: people are pretty well able to enjoy themselves and get a lot of fun work done, and do a lot of fulfilling things on their computer, when connected (and when disconnected, but that's not really what we're talking about here)...
SO, there are ppl who in the real world do a lot of work. they're the majority. there are ppl who do a lot of work on the computer, with a very minimal amount connectivity. and as a very small minority, there are people who are connected a lot, and who use it extensively in their lives. and lasty, in my categorial escapades, there are those who are lazy, and who let things go in their real life. i am happily not one of them (believe it or not) but that's not the point i want to make. the point i want to make is that while that last group exists (and it is a very small group), there's really no harm in that. let them do what they do. encourage them to uplift, if u are so concerned, but otherwise i see only people worried that they will themselves fall into this group. otherwise, why are u so concerned?
but most people aren't that group. so ppl should be so hard on themselves, or each other, for playing with new things....
THERE'S SO much more to talk about here, and it's an interesting topic... i think you're all great, and i agree the commenting on the songs is weak.. it's always been weak. honestly, though, i have some ideas as to what could help that... but that's another topic entirely... SECOND LIFE IS HOTT Y0

i have seen that one half of orbital link played a show there, and i have met giles peterson and mixmaster morris while playing the game. so i wonder, are these people wasting their time? or is it any different than posting your tracks and shooting the sh*t on a forum? ;) i do agree that when people substitute it for going outside it's sad, but I also see that obviously some are using it as a networking and advertising tool.....
i don't want to defend it cause like i said i'm not quite sure what to think, so i do appreciate the opinions here. but before i started playing it (and really the lamest part is I play a tetris like game INSIDE the game most of the time) all i did at work was surf the net, so is it much worse?

i don't understand second life... i have far too much stuff going on in first life to even begin to think about second life.
I'll worry about second life when i'm dead... and maybe third life.
p.s. lol at John L. tell him to get a second life.

i just remembered, this second life game reminds me of that neal stephenson novel snow crash. cyberspace, internets made of tubes, the metaverse, and avatars and shit.

i think most things invented after 1999 are total waste of time. myspace, multiplayer games, skype, netlabels, paypal, ebay, amazon.
oh, and tv was so much nicer in black and white. i predict mass alienation syndrome across the developed nations. in fact, i'm going to register link. kerrching!
