--> as much as i love osx i have some real problems with apple stuff the last couple of weeks and months
first of all, i got this shiny macbookpro, which had the whine and heat issues in the first place, so i got my logicboard changed, just to realize, that now the fans are all blowing the whole time, so i got it changed a second time. after that the whine and the heat were back again. plus it had the strange thing, that quite often it thought i had a second monitor attached so it booted in 600x480 or 1920xwhatever
so i called apple support and after some discussion and bringing the mbp again to some retailer to check i got it replaced.
when, and for what kind of model – i don't know. they haven't told me yet.

then i installed itunes 7.1 on my g5. after that, the whole library was just a huge white rectangle. (wtf) so after deinstalling and reinstalling like 3 times and importing all my musicfiles back into the library (about 30 gb - i haven't taken quite a lot of cds with me, when i moved to munich) i finally got it to work.
this morning i wanted to put up some new tunes on my 3gen ipod.
but...
it's not recognized. apple suggests ressting, but this is not an option, as my ipod-hd is a little corrupt and it took my about 2 days, to get it to work again. so resetting it, would probabaly make it more or less die forever.

and i bought some new cds i wanted to hear on my way to work. fuck.

I'm one of the lucky ones. I got a gen1 Powerbook and it still runs. It looks like the power cord is going to break on me before the computer does. It's five years old now, and the only problems I've had are a grumpy cd/dvd drive and the track pad just quite about a month ago (not really a big deal for me). The case is all cracked, and if I rest my arm on it right it'll give me little shocks, but it runs.
I have been looking at computers because my PB is obviously on it's last legs... I am so torn. I don't really want to drop the dough on another Apple, but I've been spoiled by the ease of not having to defend my computer on a daily basis. I'm leaning towards PC right now though...you just get more for your money.

i dont ever defend my computer. but then i don't visit dodgy sites.... the whole adware, spyware, virus thing has only ever affected me once, years ago after visiting a dodgy serialzzz site. i don't know what the perception is of xp for people in mac land but don't believe the hype.

Just got my iBook fixed for the crap logic board problem...before that I was fairly rosy-eyed about apple.

Now I realize that Jobs is a tool in his own way, and I'm not likely to get into a discussion of macs vs pcs.

i still love you Apple!!!!

i could never be mad at you!

i know you don't mean to hurt me....

i love you apple.

It's a good thing that Dell, Sony and Lenovo laptops never break down, otherwise this would be a weird thread.

We've (me and the wife) have owned in the past 16 years: powerbook 140, 160, duo 230, powerbook 180, wallstreet, titanium g4, 12 powerbook g4 (2x), ibooks (2x) a macbook and a macbook pro. And an LC, SE, Q630, Q650, PM6100, PM7100, PM7500, iMac G4 (2x) and a MDD. And 2x 1g pods, two minis, two shuffles, a 3g and now 2 5.5g ipods. And three Airport basesatations. I've always bought the applecare and I've never had to pay for a repair out of pocket, not once. I've sold all of these for >50% what I paid for them when I've upgraded. That said I did have a shuffle that died out of coverage and one airport that died after four years.

I guess I should knock on wood.

wow n9, that's 21 macs! that's quite some upgrading plan you've got

just saw a 1985 128k RAM mac that still works last week, the same one I had back in the day, lovely machine
still have a 1st gen PB G4 as well, but the harddrive is doing all kinds of weird things, and the hinges are broken

it's just that 'they don't make them like they used to' but suppose that goes for all kinds of things nowadays

My 1st-gen MBP just works, mostly. It's not noisy. The only hardware problem I've had with it is that sometimes discs will get stuck in the slot-loading drive, requiring tipping the computer while ejecting the disc to get it back out. Lame, but things could be worse I guess.

I like OS X, although pretty much every other operating system is probably better for making music these days. If you think of it as a Unix desktop, OS X seems pretty impressive.

I've had so many weird little hardware problems with the ten or so Macs I've owned, I'm never surprised any more. Usually they are less frustrating problems than the PC problems I've had to deal with, but they are there nonetheless and they've sometimes been bad enough to cause loss of time and data, which shouldn't ever be thought of as acceptable. The MBP has actually been the most reliable Mac I have owned in terms of daily use, but I've heard from many people who got stuck with lemons.

I just keep using them because I have so much invested in software, both money and time spent learning.

xp service pack 2 has one little glitch. i get a lag time when loading internet explorer v.6
other than this little issue, i've never been happier with a comp.box. of course $150 was a lot to pay for it.
i got away from the "lastest win release!" syndrome and am finally free to use the comp.
apple 2 was the shit.

it went downhill after that. if I can play "wings of fury" on an ipod, I'll stop hating macs.

those bullshit comercials are making me hate them more than usual.
"only COOL people use macs!"

Video

"I like the handle, so I can attach a chain and use it AS A BOAT ANCHOR!!!"

I still laugh really hard at this spoof (it's like 5 years old)

I had this same realization with my power book a couple years back, notice I no longer have it.
Apple is nothing more than a Dell with pretty packaging. They don't make any better hardware etc, they have just as many faults as a Dell. They just have a really good OS, but hardware wise, it LOOKS nice, but it's really nothing spectacular.

I'm kind of glad I can't afford a Mac.

what are the macbooks like (not the Pro versions)? I'm considering a 13" for portability

I am kind of considering a mac mini, but only because its a pretty much fully functioning computer that is the size of a stack of cd's that will sit on my music desk and not take up any room.

I know my way around computers. I don't need something to hold my hand through everything, and I don't need something that is going to hide what is going on from me. I do need something that will not take up space.

Its a comprimise as far as I am concerned. I only need it for basic sequencing needs, so I won't need to worry about not being able to upgrade it.

I'm an industrial designer and I've been using Macs for the last 3-4 years. I've had iBooks and PowerBooks and now I have a iMac and a MacBook Pro. In these last years I never lost data! I only saw a computer crash! And I only needed Apple support once!

My Macs are on 24/7 and I never had a single problem! Never needed to to backups and completely trust the hardware/software. And trust me, I have a lot to lose ;)

Some people now are having problems with MBP, but I recently purchased a MBP 2.33Ghz C2D and it's amazing! Extra fast and secure! It's pretty solid and with low-noise (thank you Intel). Never had a single problem with it yet, and I push a lot from him! Tis little bastards spends most of his day making 3D renders on Maxwell Render.... hehehe

I only have good things to say about Apple! The same about iPods... I have/had iPod 4G, iPod Colour, iPod 5.5G, iPod Shuffle 1G, iPod Mini and never had a single problem!!!! :O

do you work at apple wahit?

you should back up your data. everyone's luck runs out sooner or later and i certainly don't want to read more threads about "why is data recovery so expensive?".
