here's a great article about "loudness wars" in general, but many things too.
link
foudn the link via osxa via ableton forum.
that dood from that link said: "Levels have crept up over the last decade though, and alarmingly so. Nevermind is 6-8dB quieter than, say, Hopes & Fears by Keane—to contextualise this, those 6-8dB will make Nevermind sound approximately half as loud."
the issue i find with "loud" and digital playback, is that there is a ceiling. and because of this ceiling you really cannot force "loud" naturaly. Tru loudness is best left to the amplification stage, not to the transport stage.
also, fook, thats a long article. thx god for speed reading.

I just got Slayer's "Reign In Blood" import picture disc vinyl for my birthday, and I'm getting all worked up to make new digital files from it to replace the crappy ones I got from itunes. Now when I play this loud, the walls shall truly bleed!!!

has anyone else heard the recently re-mastered "Violator" release? I'm curious what mastering gurus think of this. I have heard comparisons of previous "Greatest Hits" attempts to re-master old DM tracks and they sounded like ass--no dynamics, no tension, all harsh bright front loaded crap.
However, I have overall fairly enjoyed the work on the new Violator re-release. One track in particular is over-smushed (Policy of Truth) and a bit difficult to take, but otherwise it sounds pretty good to my ear.
The 5.1 mix is absolutely gorgeous.

u2's "how to dismantle an atomic bomb" goes down on my list as the most overcompressed album i've ever heard. the quiet ballads are exactly the same volume as the loudest guitar solos. it's ridiculous. album of the year my arse. it's so flat it hurts.

@ cbit: you mean ReplayGain? sure, anything compensated makes things much more simple: the loudly mastered stuff sounds worse than music with dynamics.
