--> i'm fed up. i want to travel. i want excitement. life is short.

i'm becoming increasingly prepared to take my next student loan installment of 2000 quid and move to america for a year or so. that would involve dropping out of college. but seriously, that sounds so appealing right now. i'm only in my first year, and the course sucks. I mean i really don't learn much. I have no enthusiasm. The only thing that I go in for is a hot girl that I was seeing, and really really like, but now that has all gone wrong and we are just like best mates, which is amazing - she is amazing, but it will all end in tears when she runs off with another man and tells me in graphic detail about her one night stands etc....

so, how easy would it be to get to america, get a job, and stay for a year or so with 2000quid ($3864) ???

will anyone employ a lowly brit? a music related job would be so ace.

also, where to go? america is a big place. nyc? sounds like fun but will i get my face shot off? san fran? la? canada even?

any ideas? anyone got a job for me? anyone rent me a house? wanna start a band?

i need to be decided within a week, cos i'm supposed to be moving in with some college mates, and i can't leave them in the lurch and run off to america. but know i am very seriously considering this.

another problem, i have a fear of flying. now i will put up with this obviously, but anyone know of boat travel to america/candada? is it possible? expensive?

i need advice and ideas.

x

stay at home. work through tough phases.

will make you come out stronger than ever. that's a least something i learned out of life.

running away doesn't solve anything

I second ... or third ... Austin, Texas. totally cool place. its the Hollywood of Texas (with more hippies).

all the stereotypes you hear of about Texas don't really apply to Austin (but they're pretty damn accurate for the rest of the state though). One of the biggest advantages of living here is you don't have to pay a state income tax, which is awesome.

I went to NY for a week and have never felt safer in a city. I also went to Phoenix AZ for 3 weeks and loved the desert weirdness- a totally new experience for an East Anglian country bumpkin. I'm planning on moving over when I grow up if I can stand like the whole totally like nasal American talking thing- it's so not even funny.

I'd recommend you try one of the 'b-list' cities like St. Louis, Omaha, Nashville, Louisville, Atlanta, Austin etc. Southern California and NYC you should just rule out: housing costs are unbearable for somebody in our financial situation. I rent a place thats 1300 square feet (120.7 sq. m.) for under $700/mo.
Median Income in Indianapolis: $65,000/yr
Median House Cost in ' ' : $150,000

Median Income in LA: $55,000/yr
Median Housing cost: $525,000
I work with a lot of UPS drivers who make $100,000+ per year and live in houses that they bought for CASH. It's that cheap in some parts of the US.
I think Atlanta would be a GREAT choice for you. The job market in Atlanta has always been stellar, theres a lot of multimedia business, and is has a half-decent mass transit system and a lot of downtown real estate you can afford. Atlanta is a very cosmopolitan and clean place, with a ton of diversity. And its like i dunno 30-40 minutes from some of the strangest cultural experiences you can ever have.
But wherever you decide on, you should be prepared for total culture shock. America is a very different place from EU, and like any other cultural experience, you shouldn't try to judge it by those standards. The more isolated or rural place you choose, the more different it will be from your culture. Also, the food here is way better. Real Mexican food is one of the best things about America, next to monster trucks link and root beer link .
But America is great, you just shouldn't come here and be the "ugly european" like pawel.

Yeah, if you feel like going to America, go to America - even just for a few week's wandering- you'll have a chance to clear your head and experience something new.

New Zealand has a good working holiday scheme you could easily get here on that being a brit and NZ being a commonwealth nation. Anyway, i don't know if there are any music jobs around but their are plenty of jobs on orchards .

Oh yeah and the electronic scene is not so big here. Most people like hip hop and NZ hip hop is really sad . . . all these pacific islanders trying to imitate what they see on American music videos. It even got to a point where too rival gangs started dressing up in red and blue and calling themselves the crips and the bloods and attacking each other. When they got caught by police and were asked why they did it they didn't really know themselves.

The other types of music over here are regae and this really annoying type of music called dub where they just run everything through an analogue tape delay with extreme setting to mask the fact they have no talent and can't sing.

but other than that NZ is fine . . .

..also, get ready for some major female attention as soon as the girls hear you speak.

tooth = one of the main reasons for me wanting to go ;)
BTW, where's my present? Did it pass?

come to canada!

montreal and vancouver are canada's best cities.

tooth - you never gave me your address!

10 is this something you want to do for (1) yourself (experience life) or do you want to (2) impress people (namely that girl) by telling them "i spent a year in america"?
20 goto
25 if (1) = go, whatever it may take
30 if (2) = consider again, fool
40 goto 10

comma 8 comma 1

hahahahahah ahahhahaha

Check out Montreal, Canada.
It's extremely cheap and has the highest student-to-non-student ratio of any North American city.
It's a wonderful city.

But... it's cold.

Avoid New York like the plague. Will you be legal to work? If you want cheap, the midwest is good, but then again they may not have all the music stuff. Actually, I recommend places like Memphis, TN or Tampa, FL. There is a LOT of work in Tampa. Florida is nice weather but it's a bit nasty otherwise. But yeah there is work in Tampa. Washington, DC area is where I live and there is a lot of work here also but it's getting pricey. And it's not really music and all that. Detroit, MI is starting to become an artist/graphic design mecca of sorts and it's cheap and cool. Maybe you could go there for the DEMF in May and just... you know... stay. California has nice weather and there is loads of music related stuff. But if you're a fuck up, as in if you have problems staying on the straight and narrow, California will mess you up. Texas has a LOT going on also.

I advise you to come here legally because there is a lot of backlash against illegals right now and although you're English and all, why bother with that noise you know? Get legal and come over. There are lots of places to settle down and start a life.
