--> i'm fed up. i want to travel. i want excitement. life is short.

i'm becoming increasingly prepared to take my next student loan installment of 2000 quid and move to america for a year or so. that would involve dropping out of college. but seriously, that sounds so appealing right now. i'm only in my first year, and the course sucks. I mean i really don't learn much. I have no enthusiasm. The only thing that I go in for is a hot girl that I was seeing, and really really like, but now that has all gone wrong and we are just like best mates, which is amazing - she is amazing, but it will all end in tears when she runs off with another man and tells me in graphic detail about her one night stands etc....

so, how easy would it be to get to america, get a job, and stay for a year or so with 2000quid ($3864) ???

will anyone employ a lowly brit? a music related job would be so ace.

also, where to go? america is a big place. nyc? sounds like fun but will i get my face shot off? san fran? la? canada even?

any ideas? anyone got a job for me? anyone rent me a house? wanna start a band?

i need to be decided within a week, cos i'm supposed to be moving in with some college mates, and i can't leave them in the lurch and run off to america. but know i am very seriously considering this.

another problem, i have a fear of flying. now i will put up with this obviously, but anyone know of boat travel to america/candada? is it possible? expensive?

i need advice and ideas.

x

Portland is full of people on heroin. Don't go there!

Actually after reading what some others have said, maybe you should finish school first. If it's boring, try to interact more with your teachers and I think it will become better if you do that. Just focus you know. What do you study? I hope it's something useful. Finish school and then if you want to come here, come with that DEGREE in your hand and things will be better. I have known several English people and came to the US and settled down and they all had degrees.

thats good advice. it will be much easier to migrate here once you've got the education (from a financial and legal perspective)

at least its easier to get in here than canada, though.

don't come to portland, you'll have to put up with mlbot

+1 stick with educ for now

im still in two minds. really though, im only 22. i can always begin studies again sometime, in a year or so. it seems i'm going to have trouble workin in america for a year anyway, i don't think ill get a visa. not without a degree. lame. is canada easier?

does anyone have experience with this? im trying to look into the process but it seems hard. a lot of places will find you work but only during the summer if you are STILL studying. others will find you work for up to 9 months but you don't get to choose where or when or doing what....that kinda sucks.

i don't mind working in a coffee shop or cleaning up peoples spills, but i don't know how to go about getting this all sorted. hmmm. advice?

this is one i have seen

link

canada is probably not much easier to get into. I tried taking the test. you still pretty much need a degree, family relations, or a badass job to get in

edit: that website makes America look like a giant disney vacation LOL

awesome!@ tylth c64 progs. lol yes! ,8,1 that's hot.
yghartsyrt - agree with him. work through the tough patches. that's best advice on 4 pages.
although we're all more than happy for you to come commiserate with our own shrubby Comandante presidente suprema decider!

montreal is only cold in the winter.
in the summer.. its HOT AS HELL.. jesus god.
try canada out.. probalby have more fun. american is full of men with claws for hands.. no good really
Don't come to Boston (it generally sucks and is really expensive).

Like others said Montreal is incredible. I only spent 5 days there last year, but that was enough for me to seriously consider moving there. I love it and hope to go back this year.

Unless you are very sure you can find employment, your budget to me seems extremely optimistic. A very modest monthly will be around $700-1000 (rent/food/transpo/misc) anywhere on the west coast (area I'm familiar with)- unless you are willing to rough it. If you have a place to crash (sorry..not a plane reference) while you establish yourself it would be alot better..you can blow through alot of cash when you just show up somewhere...

look at craigslist.com for the areas you are considering.
San fran apartments: studio $900, one-bedroom $1100-1500.

One, this just sounds like a bad idea.
Two, Austin isn't the only cool place in Texas. Houston is really cool and has a really great underground scene, people just don't choose to look at it except really rich curators. Austin is a scene hog and they're dicks about it to, just because they think they're all a bunch of hippies and they live in a pretty town. But yeah. Texas is absolutely nothing like people think it is, unless you drive out to the middle of no where. And the downside of it, is that it takes at least 8 hours just to leave the damn state.

ok so further developments in my spontaneous quest for adventure. i may go to phuket in thailand and live for 6 months or so. it looks as though i can probably rent an appartment and live well for around 250 pounds a month. rad. you should see the beaches.

any experience with thailand? oooh im getting excited.

yeah bro, i would stick out college. i thought i would go crazy by the time i reached my senior year, but i stuck it out and learned a lot. not only the books, but also a lot about myself.

with that said, if you were to pick a good place to move to in the states, i would say the NW is a probably a good start. portland is a chill city. it isn't terribly big, but it has a lively music scene, and it seems that more people are moving here all of the time. some nice greenery too (ahem).

i know staying in college is the sensible thing to do. but telling me this isn't going to affect my decision. i gotta work out what i need at the moment. oh, and no offense to anyone that has mentioned this, but i'm not going to relocate to a different country for the quality of the weed.....

if you take the student loan then leave you have to pay it back immediately no? sounds like a whole lot of trouble. if the course sucks change it, take a year out, work for 6 months then goto america or canada for 6 months and have some fun.
