i'm fed up. i want to travel. i want excitement. life is short.
i'm becoming increasingly prepared to take my next student loan installment of 2000 quid and move to america for a year or so. that would involve dropping out of college. but seriously, that sounds so appealing right now. i'm only in my first year, and the course sucks. I mean i really don't learn much. I have no enthusiasm. The only thing that I go in for is a hot girl that I was seeing, and really really like, but now that has all gone wrong and we are just like best mates, which is amazing - she is amazing, but it will all end in tears when she runs off with another man and tells me in graphic detail about her one night stands etc....
so, how easy would it be to get to america, get a job, and stay for a year or so with 2000quid ($3864) ???
will anyone employ a lowly brit? a music related job would be so ace.
also, where to go? america is a big place. nyc? sounds like fun but will i get my face shot off? san fran? la? canada even?
any ideas? anyone got a job for me? anyone rent me a house? wanna start a band?
i need to be decided within a week, cos i'm supposed to be moving in with some college mates, and i can't leave them in the lurch and run off to america. but know i am very seriously considering this.
another problem, i have a fear of flying. now i will put up with this obviously, but anyone know of boat travel to america/candada? is it possible? expensive?
i need advice and ideas.

no i don't think i pay it back straight away. i think the same applies as if the course finished, but i will look into that. i'm considering quitting college, working for 6 months and saving, and then being able to travel for longer.

Lowercase - Haha! Can you imagine someone getting that defensive about an area of England?!!
"You know, Frome isn't the only happening place in West Somerset, Corsham has a really happening underground croche and pastry scene. The Frome guys are dicks, they just think they're all so West Country cos they drink cider and can't read. The downside is, if you drive for half an hour it takes half an hour to get back again."

no you dont have to pay for your loan straight away. i didnt anyway. unless things have changed.
also, there is some sort of clause where if you move to another country for a few years you dont have to pay it back, ever. i think.

yeah soft, i think its 7 years outside the eu. you also don't pay it back if you don't earn over 15000 a year. nice.

no mention of chicago? Rent can be cheap and you don't "need" a car.
Music scene is dog eat dog. Good though.

I still don't know if I would reccomend moving somewhere that was under martial law a couple months ago, and whose government has been threatening to take down the only non-state run television station for not paying the prime minister's office. There were recent bombings(new years eve) in Bangkok that killed a few people, and currency is rapidly destabilizing. It'd be a hell of an experience, but if I were you I'd take a look at Vietnam, which I hear is gorgeous and doing pretty well for itself. The commies are still in charge, but free trade has the country booming.
I don't know if there is any place in the whole world more different than the UK than SE asia...my best friend spent a few years in Vietnam and S. Korea and absolutely raves about the food and the people.

bsr is correct, if you apply for a loan for the next year of course and then don't attend the course then whoever gave you the loan will more than likely demand the money back and probably want it immediately. I know someone who quit his university course on his 3rd year. SAAS (Student Awards Agency for Scotland) were paying his fees and gave him loans, a few weeks after quitting, SAAS were demanding however many thousands of pounds he owed and wanted it up front without delay.
For the last 3 year years he has been living in Japan teaching English, purely so he would not have to pay the money back.
He had absolutely no interest in teaching and very little interest in Japan before the demand for money came. Luckily for him it seems you don't need much experience or qualifications to take on a TEFL teaching position.
Upping the threshold to £15,000 grand before you repay just lures you into a false sense of security. I graduated in 2003 with an honours degree and still don't have a regular full time job, my loan has jumped from 11,500 to over 13,000. It could be a while yet before i even start repaying and i could be paying it back for many many years to come.
don't make any stupid decisions now.
ps my uni course sucked balls too

i quit my course at salford uni just after getting my final loan, which was £1500 cos they gave me less than they should have in the previous installments.
when i quit though i didnt tell them i was quitting, i just didnt go back.
also its SLCL (student loan company ltd) in england so maybe they have different rules or something.
