We closed on a house last week (finally!).
It's currently uninhabitable, but it's a nice old house on 7 acres in rural Virginia. The lease on our rental expires in 6 weeks. It's a race against time as an electronic musician and a poet attempt to renovate their first home!

Great stuff - that's going to be ridiculous hard, and perhaps occasionally regretful work, but also fun and rewarding. Looks massive, and with a huge garden to boot. I've just moved into a Victorian house on the edge of town, and am currently undoing all the dodgy 70s 'improvements' the previous owners have inflicted on the place (polystyrene ceiling rose? yep). They also left some old sofas with dozens of rank porn mags stashed under the cushions (though sadly not Victorian porn, that'd be ace), which was an amusing find. I'd hate to think how tough rebuilding a bathroom is, as plumbing and electrics are serious business. I'm having a hard enough time redecorating the lounge, as it was more or less held together with custard-yellow lining paper, which is now duly stripped.
Best of luck John - will be keeping up with the blog with interest. Hope the self-sustaining lifestyle pans out well too.

In Australia we'd do a reality series out of that "It's a race against time as an electronic musician and a poet attempt to renovate their first home!" premise.
your house looks spooky and cool, and real Southern

yeah let me just chime in and recommend that you call your local electrician's or plumber's unions and get qualified personnel to do that. Get one of the good, really old guys who would love to teach you about what he's working on and how to do it. that would be an easier way to learn these skills than breaking things.
I'm jealous, still renting. But I sure like calling somebody and saying that the roof is leaking, and having it fixed for free.

i'd travel far for an em outdoor celebration around a campfire w/a loud PA.
there are some good resources here for putting that sort of thing together and I'd be totally into it.
"we" as in you and your spouse?
yep, my wife and I.
What are you researching?
major donors, in a nutshell. researching/writing/editing. been getting into data analysis and modeling here lately though. database stuff is kind of like reaktor in some ways. maybe I'm reaching with that one...but I like drawing lines between boxes and finding connections/data relationships that can tell me something or show me something that I wasn't expecting.
Great stuff - that's going to be ridiculous hard, and perhaps occasionally regretful work, but also fun and rewarding.
thanks Chris and good luck with your place too!
deltasleep - luckily the bulk of the electrical is upgraded and new (the panel is new, passed inspection, etc) and most of the outlets in the house are okay. There are about 6 or 10 outlets that need replaced but I can handle that. same with the light fixtures. the plumbing on the other hand...I've never done it but am told that it's not so bad with the new materials. the system in the house is very basic, and the toilet stack and main drain to the septic are in good shape so all we'll really be doing is replacing the supply lines to the shower/sink/toilet. I'm going to fix the sink drain line too, since it fell apart last night when we were digging under the bathroom. old pvc, dried up glue.
yeah, it's going to be a hell of a lot of work but it won't be the first time we've tempted fate - we did our wedding ourselves too (food to dancefloor construction to ceremony) and that was many months straight of working and planning. though, a huge part of that success was due to the amazing generosity and hard work of family and friends.
anyway, I'm really touched by all of your responses! thanks so much!
