--> We closed on a house last week (finally!).

It's currently uninhabitable, but it's a nice old house on 7 acres in rural Virginia. The lease on our rental expires in 6 weeks. It's a race against time as an electronic musician and a poet attempt to renovate their first home!

Tenine--

pysingo: that isnt one of the sexy polaroids, sorry.

Lolol! Thanks ML!

LOLahahaLOL!

just thought this could with a bump

heh, missed that bump - thanks

we moved in a couple of weekends ago. it's making things easier and harder.

the easier things include not having to drive home at 11:30pm after working and only having to maintain one place.

the harder things include: it's feeling homier, so it's harder to start working some nights.

the hardest thing: we're fucking exhausted. and not even half way done!

sort of between major projects at the moment. with the bathroom done (minus some trim work), we've been researching the tin roof rehab project. meanwhile, we've enjoyed eating out of a cooler because the refrigerator died, dealing with an intermittant phone line (everytime I sand clean one contact, another crackle arises), a ceiling fan that decided to quit, and the mystery of the front room light/fan that just died. we suppose the house electrical systems are just going through a period of stress right now, having not been used in many years. Actually, we were taking a walk up the road on Sunday and got to talking with a neighbor who lives a few doors (and 1/4 or more) down. She was saying in the 5 years that she's been living there, she doesn't think anyone has lived in our place. So now we can bump the "having been abandoned" number up a couple of years. Jeez.

man be careful with that electrical system. sounds like you know how to renovate, but i'd be scared to move in without gutting all the wiring and starting from scratch.

just remember: stop, drop, and roll!
man be careful with that electrical system.

yeah, I'm pretty careful. most of the electrical was already updated, but the two front rooms are still powered by that old black Romex and I'm still in the process of tracing its paths. I'll feel better once I replace that circuit. as for all the other outlets though, I've managed to locate and correct a couple of open grounds and one incorrectly wired GFI.

sounds like you know how to renovate

well...learning anyway.

really need to get a fire extinguisher in the house.

wow. i hadn't checked your blog in some time. it really is coming along. you guys are bustting your asses there and it shows. lot's of work but it looks great. i hope the winter isn't slowing you down too much.

thanks man!

yeah, still busting ass. every night after work and every weekend. it's insane. it has been 9 months of this. we're starting to see some light at the end of the tunnel though...basically at this point we just need to finish the ceilings, repair the front porch and put some handrails up, make and install all the trim and moulding, finish up some insulation, paint, and uh...well, it's a lot and there's more, but we think that by the end of January we will be able to stop the madness and relax for a while. rest up. we've done some crazy shit and can hardly believe it sometimes. like hoisting those 350lb oak beams or relocating that old shed, or running 1400 feet of pex tubing under the floors.

yeah, it really is coming along though. amazing.

thanks for checking up and thanks for the kind words

yeah man.. you guys did tons of hard work and it's really looking great. so far you are doing a great job.. so don't get lazy and start half-assing things (like i do when i'm tired of doing something)

haha, yeah, we won't start half assing it. this finish work is really exciting because it just does so much for making the place look together. plus, we're not kidding ourselves here - even though we're close to completing the deadline work, we've got major plans for other projects on our own terms. but that will all come after a long rest and a return to growing vegetables...

holy shit, we did it!

(just felt like I needed to add some closure to this blog post.)

it only took eleven and a half months! haha. we had been on target to finish Feb. 1, but we chose a terrible paint color for the dining and living rooms and had to prime over it all and pick another. but we got it this time. then we scrubbed the place down (we'd been using the dining room as a wood-working shop, deep drifts of sawdust) and even bailed a couple of pieces of furniture out of storage. made a huge meal with some friends to celebrate.

of course we've got a list of stuff we still want to do within the next couple of months, but for now, we're just enjoying NOT having to work on the house every night and every weekend. a welcomed lifestyle change. actually feeling well-rested. and we broke ground on the veggie garden.

some updated pics here: link

anyway, that is all.

well done! certainly looks like it was worth the effort.
