--> So I've been in this band (myspace.com/thepositivejam) and it's been going really well. I feel like it's really helped me reconceptualize how I write, and figure out what I'm really in this whole thing for.

1) Songs must come from one place. If I think in "loops", songs never happen. Moving to the arrange view in Live (versus the session) early in the process is good.

2) I need concepts and messages, things I want to say with the music/lyrics. I need to feel focused. I used to be afraid of concepts, but I like the limits they can provide sometimes.

3) Good pop music is hard.

4) When I cook, the dishes never taste as good as they do if someone else makes them. Sometimes, with music, knowing how each sound was created, hearing the song over and over, kills some of the thrill of hearing that melody for the first time.

It's also reinforced this: 5) When the inspiration is there, let it burn. I carry a tape recorder with me to record little snippets of melodies that come into my head.

That Tiesto interview is fucking brilliant.

Oh and I agree with #4 - I feel like the magic is missing in the music I make, compared to listening to my influences/peers. But is it really, or is it the result of looping 16 bars for 2 hours while I fiddle with panning and filter settings?

I talked to Tycho about production a few days ago when he was in town for a show. He mentioned something he's been doing - working on just one track for a month, intensely- if there are sections in there that are making him crazy, after hearing those parts over and over again, then he knows those parts aren't good enough for release.

thou shalt not mention tiesto and brilliance in the same thought.

We didn't start the fire
It was always burning
Since the world's been turning
We didn't start the fire
No we didn't light it
But we tried to fight it

loops are great for inspiration , i simply need something to start composing and most of the times ive turned my attention to loops.
Like most of the things if you stay in the same loop and do not progress with your composition, go and do something else.
Ive find and manage vary of ways to stay focused, one of my tips is, never i mean never be afraid of the unknown , this means that if you never try something that you are afraid of for some reason, go on and do it.
The other thing that helps me with my fire is trying to get in exploration mode (this is why i love circuit bending) i can close my computer and have fun playing with circuits, it helps me a lot getting new ideas for composing.

omg that kenny loggins cover cracks me up j_chot. kudosoe
