I've noticed two new artists out there using the "umami" moniker--a rock band out of NY and an electropop band out of Sweden. The NY rock band seems to be somewhat aggressively staking out their territory with the name, especially on lastfm.com, where they've made it clear that there are two artists with the name. The Swedish band claims to be releasing an album in April, which should be a surprise if they try to sell through iTunes... So, I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on how to deal with these folks, or if I should worry at all? Should I contact them, or, particularly, the label for the Swedes? I'm reluctant to join an organization like BMI or ASCAP because of their close ties to the RIAA, but might it be a good way to establish a precendent for the name? I'll be buggered if I'm going to give up umami, especially since I've already released an album under the name...

avoid the useless arguments and just add an extra letter to your name that is supposedly "silent". Saves time, money and headaches.
examples such as: youmami, or uomami, umamie, etc.

Several options still... 1) Ask them to join you. If they say NO! try 2) Ask them out for a beer and poison them OR if you don't like that kind of thing 3) I know this guy, who knows this dude who hangs out at the bar who would totally do it for way less than all the court costs. I daresay there might be a website out there that wacks bands off (not the pleasurous kind mind you) who have the same name as yours. Wackoffthisbandwiththesamenameasmine.com or something. Ask google, he (or she) seems to know everything.

that typrwytr was abusing spelling and thus I skipped right to point 2). Hence their disappearance. Whackthisbandoff has a very sweet sound about it.

I'm having the same problem with a Japanese hard rock band that's also called Sweet Trip... sucks. Pisses me off because the name has a long history and to me it has a meaning. This japanese band probably though of the name because it sounded cute and shit. but in this day and age, it is unbelievable that some people do not research band names online so that one doesn't end up with the same name as another group; don't people take pride in being original?!?!?!
PS: Oh shit!, I just found out Sweet Trip is registered in bandname.com, AWESOME!!

you guys are the best. i've registered with bandreg.com ($12 for what, exactly?), perhaps i'll fire off some polite emails. discog.com lists no information for any umami, except the UK electronic label. i keep hoping to get a record deal with these guys so i can release umami on umami.
i am actually having trouble getting myself recognized by orgs like discog and allmusic.com, and currently amazon.com lists my album as "unavailable".

Have you started a label page on discogs? You have to do that first so that you can then attach your CD to a label.
