I've noticed two new artists out there using the "umami" moniker--a rock band out of NY and an electropop band out of Sweden. The NY rock band seems to be somewhat aggressively staking out their territory with the name, especially on lastfm.com, where they've made it clear that there are two artists with the name. The Swedish band claims to be releasing an album in April, which should be a surprise if they try to sell through iTunes... So, I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on how to deal with these folks, or if I should worry at all? Should I contact them, or, particularly, the label for the Swedes? I'm reluctant to join an organization like BMI or ASCAP because of their close ties to the RIAA, but might it be a good way to establish a precendent for the name? I'll be buggered if I'm going to give up umami, especially since I've already released an album under the name...

yah, umami.tv is taking off in a big way. i haven't worried about them because they're a label, not an artist. these other guys though--wtf? i did tons of research when i coined the name to make sure i wasn't infringing on someone else's gig. how hard is a simple itunes search? fortunately, i have some legacy attached to the name, here and elsewhere. i've written a nice email to the swedes. these guys in new york...hmm.

I dunno, you might want to fill out the copyright forms for a couple of your songs, or (better yet) maybe even register your album as a whole with the library of congress. It'll set you back a few dollars, but might be worth it especially if you're trying to establish more of a precedent legally speaking.
I just signed up with last.fm for you, and my name was already taken lol. This is the destiny of all band names eventually (and the domain namespace too for that matter). eventually humans will run out of original letter combinations to use, if it hasn't happened already.
ps. for use last.fm-challenged folks, how exactly do I vote on your image? I'm compfused. I see no voting buttons, just the pictures.. Yours the one with the big bad voodoo daddy wannabees in it right? Do I need internet explorer?

there's 3 or 4 ignatius' on myspace. i made them all my friends. i've been using the name for a long time and have numerous releases and deal w/IODA and itunes etc. on discogs, reveiwed in mags and whateva.. i think that's all i can do.
anyway- i didn't see where i could "vote" on last FM.

it's silly just how little research some bands are willing to do. i remember, only a few years ago, reading in a forum somewhere when this guy was venting his ass off because he'd just heard that someone else had already taken his band's name, and now that they had their album recorded and all ready to self-release they had to come up with a new name. somehow, he'd been living under a rock or something and was totally unaware there was already a band called weezer (i think weezer was releasing their 4th mega-hit lp at the time and couldn't be reached for comment).
i only wish i was kidding. the great majority of musicians are stupid, stoopid, stupido (present company excepted).

i also stumbled across a shitty house record on iTunes by someone calling themselves Fugazi. not as obvious as weezer, but almost more egregious when you consider their history of integrity & bending over backwards to respect other musicians (always making sure their opening acts get paid before they do, etc.)
