--> I've noticed two new artists out there using the "umami" moniker--a rock band out of NY and an electropop band out of Sweden. The NY rock band seems to be somewhat aggressively staking out their territory with the name, especially on lastfm.com, where they've made it clear that there are two artists with the name. The Swedish band claims to be releasing an album in April, which should be a surprise if they try to sell through iTunes... So, I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on how to deal with these folks, or if I should worry at all? Should I contact them, or, particularly, the label for the Swedes? I'm reluctant to join an organization like BMI or ASCAP because of their close ties to the RIAA, but might it be a good way to establish a precendent for the name? I'll be buggered if I'm going to give up umami, especially since I've already released an album under the name...

umami - you should hcange your name to "stephen colbert's balls"

Video

weird. no link to youtubes?

that's what you get for trying to infringe upon stephen colbert's copyright - and his balls - very un-american of you - why don't you support the troops? your just emboldening the enemy!!!

lol. i'd prefer "stephen colbert's taint," if it comes to that.

i dunno about the last.fm thing. it's possible i'm dumb. possible. haha.

Miyuki Jane Pinckard is cool. She was in a San Francisco band called dealership, among other things...but anyways.

I've been on the receiving end of one of those "hey, that's my name!" letters, and it's not fun. Although the guy who contacted me was actually really nice about the whole thing. In that case, it was pretty obvious he had the rights to the name, having toured internationally and released at least one album commercially under the name. But it was still a pain in the ass to change everything over.

One thing I learned while looking for info during that mess is that band names and the like don't really have much legal standing unless they're trademarked, but if it ever came down to legal action, the region that you've distributed your music or toured in sort of determines the validity of it's use. For example, there were two bands called The Beat in the 80s, one in England and one in the US. When the English band put out records or toured in the US, they had to be called the English Beat. Same thing happened with the Charlatans UK, and Death From Above 1979, among others.

I'd say if you're going to contact anyone, be nice first. Don't threaten anybody with legal action or ass kicking until you've had a chance to see where they stand and how they're going to react. I know that it made my ordeal easier.

umami is a taste invented by a Japanese food scientist in the 1930s... somewhere between salty and sweet... he cleverly managed to make it into monosodium glutamate...

how about changing your name to yomama yomama ?

same holds true for blink 182 - shared the name blink with some irish band.

ever notice that the band that had to change their name for legal reasons tend to be the more successful - wonder if that's karma?

LOL... "Rock Star Supernova..." BWAHAHAHAA.

That whole thing was just FUNNY.
I was just cranky that I wasn't original in coming up with umami tsunami, airliner.

I'm sure she's a great person.

she's horrible.
eats babies. but leaves the skin.
what a waste

sorry if this has already been asked, sorry that i have to ask it, really, but am i correct in assuming that the pic you want votes for is the one without dudes standing around with a bass?

LOL @ baby eater.

no no no. the pic i want votes on is a photo of my eyeball. the dudes standing around a bass is the other umami. i'm a solo gig. :D

so, i'm looking at the page again, and perhaps i've missed something. if you go here, and click on the "pics" tab, you should see my image. the grey text below it suggest that it's possible to vote on it, though i now think that might be for user-submitted images.

i dont see anythign about voting. all i see is the in the player but it doesn't list any of yoru tracks so i can't vote on them or give it the

damn. well, i uploaded my album to the site, so at least that's available.
