--> I'm fiddling around with the mpd24 and i was looking for starting reference point for established fingerings/patterns i could practice (because i could make something up of my own, but i didn't want to learn/bark myself into/up a blind alley/dead tree/wrong end).

So i was watching the aswell mpc finger drumming clip on youtube. It's the best one i've found for trying to get a handle on exactly whats happening. Of course, being on youtube the synchronisation is all out of whack, which makes it very tricky to study.

So i did a grab of the video using a os x screenrecorder soft called iShowU (a name i can't help but imagine being spoken in a thick japanese accent) link imported it into Live, rerecorded the audio and aligned it properly with the visuals.

Being able to see what was going on (most of it anyway) I made a diagram of the beat he plays in the first part of the vid (not all sounds included, just the basics). Posting it here in case its useful for anyone else too.

Here's the youtube beatz:

And here''s the diagram:

Let's try to keep it on topic.

This is a useful thread on technique, not any kind of clique-thing.

(incase anyone missed it: the greasemonkey 'ignore em411 user' script for firefox : link )

KEKEKEKEKEKE how did i miss gre3asmonkey? pawel is gone, ha hah ah

Hey just want to ask about the aswell finger drumming. Does the mpc auto quantise whatever he's playing or is he doing it strictly free?

jogn: i don't think it's quantized, because during the second 'part' the timing doesn't stay completely tight (though i guess that could be due to the video encoding maybe? i don't know)
i think mpcs have a hard quantize at about 1/320. which explains why hiphop beats are soooo groovy. the resolution of the average DAW is much higher though. one thing i like about playing live with ableton is using the pads on my trigger finger to trigger one note midi clips which are routed into the impulse. the bottom 8 pads are notes which have the groove set to straight and the top eight are mapped to the same sounds as the bottom but with the groove set to swing 16 or swing 32. one of the faders on the trigger finger is assigned to the groove amount and, as long as all the other audio clips in the live set are set to straight, it's possible for me to look like i'm a dope-ass finger drummer. which in fact, i'm not

smart trick skab!

teh finger drumming is going well, much faster progress than i had expected - which makes it a lot of fun to keep practicing.

i've been repeating the basic version of that aswell pattern for maybe four or five hours in total and now i can (usually ) do it without fumbling it up. Now i need to get the timing tighter, so i'll play along to some little loops. but my wrist is beginning to ache, time for break..

just read the headline again.
who is this MPC that is fingering diagram?

haha i guess that was inevitable ;)
