so, i like these Artic Monkeys quite a lot, as it happened for the Hives, Strokes, yeah yeah yes, etc. I mean, i like just a few of these rock (indie? ) bands but i really love that stuff when i happen to like it (does this expression makes any sense?).
What about you? I'm lately listening more to that than to EM. And i'm surprised by that.

TOOL
whatever they are, they're infinitely great
and, on a smaller scale: kings of convenience
well both bands use guitars (assuming the use of guitars are attributes for "rock" and "indie"), so they might (and if even loosely) fit bluermutts allegation

Iron Maiden is where it's at for me these days
Contempo stuff, I'm an occasional emo victim. Regarding Death Cab, love them or leave them their song-writing is very accomplished.
ETA: LOVE Mogwai to death, that last album, esp the song that showed up at the end of Miami Vice, completely incredible.

Re: Mogwai - their contribution to "The Fountain" soundtrack is amazing, esp considered they were working with Kronos Quartet.
Explosions in the Sky is also great.

If it wasn't for Iron Maiden.. I doubt I would have ever started to make music. Easily the band the inspired me to do anything.

I like rock music, all kinds, but mostly stuff from 10 to 40 years ago.
To me a lot of newer bands are just rehashing the old styles. Not that the bands I was into weren't doing the same thing, but I could tolerate it more when I was younger.

Really djugel!?!?!?! Man, if it wasn't for Iron Maiden and Steve Harris i would be an astro-physics major by now.
i like and i'm open to all kinds of music, but i'm very selective about who plays the music. i dont mind these new bands and the trends and stuff as long as i dont take it seriously... like listening to a really offensive joke, it's just for laugh and for the fun of it.
anyway, Arctic Monkey are one of the best out there i think. !!! new record bangs

I really dig mew and that mansun album six. The strokes are also great. Different genres though. I'm not exactly surprised by the fact that no one listens exclusively to electronic music. I agree it seems like the superficial aspects of rock based music is a rehash of older styles. At the same time the stuff i've heard, the rhythmic timing is more accurate, and there's a lot more sonic experimentation. Is it a new thing? Don't think so. There's only a certain number of ways to rock!
The Fountain soundtrack is great! Though i think that mogwai's getting a little bland.

Steve Harris is why I learned Upright Bass in grade school orchestra.
I have not heard the Artic Monkeys yet. I actually thought the Strokes were good and thought they got undue attention. Over-rated and Under-rated at the same time. Got a major backlash at a time when Radiohead deserved to be trashed.
Last time I was buying modern music .. I was on Darla buying stuff like this band Sweet Trip I like. ;)

urghh...sorry, the bands you mentioned make me feel ill. i like rock a lot but for me this is rehashed shite with no balls or interest - i like my rock to have one or the other - or both i am slightly overstating my case as some of what you mention holds a vague interest for me but the fact that it envokes such a luke warm response from me is probably worse than no response at all. i am not saying it has to be super heavy (although i love death metal and other heavy stuff like mr.bungle [props squeal], naked city etc) i just want something to interest me more than this!
