Urgghhh...i need to talk to someone...
I am really struggling with these mixit things. I dunno, there is no reason for it really but my head seems to get full of different ideas and approaches and i start a million pieces and finish none. It's not like it matters really as I am learning SHIT LOADS because I don't normally work very heavily with samples --- but I don't have much time to make music and mixits have somehow taken up most of this time...as I keep renaming files and trying different treatments. some other (more fruitful) projects are on hold as a result. daft eh?
Gah! help me!
In general, my music making is not always a force for good as if it doesn't come naturally, it just fucks me off and is a waste of time. I feel like that at the moment.
What should I do? Am I strangely addicted? Does anyone care?

the best thing about mixit is setting some silly goal and using the restriction to push yourself out of a rut. i've done a couple of things in mixit that i would might have never worked up the courage to do in "serious" music, like sequencing live, using compression and distortion to make squarewaves and then chopping them for a sampler/synth, writing messages for the spectrogram, making dark nrg music, reamping, lots of funny stuff that having the freedom to make something sucky gives.
it can really blast you out of a rut. it is time consuming, but sometimes you gotta let your time be consumed. better than staying in the crappy rut.
it's hard to percieve when you're learning something. i always feel stupid and slow during the process, and then realizations come in bursts. those realizations are probably more emotional than concrete.

ooh, didn't see your post astroid - due to pagination - it doesn't take much to confuse me!
i like what you suggest. in a way, it has been a bit like that so far as i am really working in new ways through mixit, some of which i like and some of which i will probably never do again ;) but i can take this further, rather than running away from it! YAY!
a lot of what has been said makes good sense and I will be setting more (bonkers) contraints and treating it more in context in future. i do really like it, i just got my head in a bit of a twist and my general lack of music making time frustrates me i guess. ta, sam.

Well put, astroid.
Easy to get afraid of deviating from your regular music making habits. Aspirations can build up high sometimes when you open up your autoload (this is going to be IT). Feels good to put that expectation aside, focus on some silly goal, and see more sides to yourself.

I just started doing dem mixits and while I am having a blast, I know how you feel. I think that's part of the point of it all though, to feel a little out of your element and to try new things, and it's not always easy psychologically. My approach now is to treat it like a big experiment (duh), envisionign myself in a lab coat pouring samples into beakers and adding other elements, and sometimes having to decide that a particular experiment was a failure, but no biggie.
