I always believed "it's not what you got it's what you do with it" when it comes to making electronic music, or any kind of art. Every once in a while though, I will meet the kat who has more than adequate gear and usually isn't that proficient at making or mixing music. It’s like in middle school when the rich kid gets the fancy guitar and can't play worth a crap. The poor kid will eventually get a POS git and blow the rich fool out of the water, because he wants it that much more! Having cheap gear makes you work harder at creating a better and more original sound. Whether all you use is just one tracker, or an old ass drum machine, if you are proficient, the rich dudes will always be saying "how does he do that?" A friend of mine used to scratch on belt drive turntables and now he has some HQ stuff and blows away the competition. Start out with the Fender Squier of equipment and when the time comes move on to the Les Paul quality. I'm still buying the cheap crap (cause I’m still poor haha) and am having just as fun a time as anyone else. I know there is a finite end to my logic where you cannot surpass the quality of the equipment you have, but when that time comes, buy the good stuff!

I'm also more of the "the right gear can go a longer way"-side. I have been playing this crappy stratocaster for years, and didn't get anywhere. Then I shelled out money to get a nice bass, and really it makes all the difference. I want to play, I want to hear its sound, it doesn't get out of tune, it feels nice, I'm in love and thus I practice a few hours everyday. Had I got a crappy bass, I would have gotten frustrated as I did with the guitar and I wouldn't be where I am. Same thing with strings, or headphones, or stuff on that level, which needs to be good to be usable. On the software side I guess it's a bit the same. I put a lot of money into my software, and bought ableton and reaktor, and I'm 100% satisfied and just use the odd vst or two, but I won't buy any new software soon. But had I gotten a sequencer which wouldn't fit most of my needs, I would be lusting for more or get frustrated and stop.

I started seriously making music with a Yamaha DJX and Tascam Porta 02. I wish I still had em to be honest. I miss my 4 track. I love my DR-202.

Ok so we realise that expensive gear doesn't make up for a lack of talent. But what do you do if you need to make up for a lack of talent?

what about if you have shitty gear, lack of talent, all the drive in the world, and make really intensely shitty music?
what about if you have expensive gear, piss all over it and do coke off of hooker's asses, and still make great, effortless music?
who fucking cares? there's no goddamn justice in the world, no matter how small you take your slice of shitpie, it's still made of shit SO DIG IN.

Yeah, we can spend limitless amounts of time saying things that sound as though they're true and all nod and go 'yeeeah.......of course'
We are all a bunch of idiots!

well i have to disagree partly with the title of the blog
the trick is to make the best out of what you have, agreed, learning evry single piece of "gear" you have inside out
but then you have to strive to have better and better equipment (or understanding) to continue to grow
otherwise it's just the outburst of a moment
