You have a domain name, next you need some hosting space (or do you also have some of that?).

For a dead simple site you'll probably want to get some standard cheap LAMP (linux apache mysql php) hosting, most hosts have this kind of package on offer.

then link

when youve put something on your hosting (using an ftp program to transfer it there) youll want to edit your name server information (usually you can do this at the3 site where you bought your domain name, youll probably need to login first), filling in the relevant details so that your domain name points to the hosting space you bought.

yessss...luckily i have college graduate girlfriend who helps me with all this

i bookmarked your page data!

Maybe the company you registered with has a free webhosting plan for domain name holders?

The most fun thing to do if you've got high speed internet is the ability to host your own website. Like cbit says it's the standard LAMP route. The downside with all this is your ip address is dynamic, so it changes everytime you get online. You'll need to update your nameserver records to point the domain name to the correct ip address. There are automated free services for this.

If you've got more specific questions it'd probably be easier to help.

link for free nameservers [resolves the dynamic IP that jogn talks about]

yea, i've got an editor and some hosting space. but the editor is really quite horrible.

definitely got hosting space though, so thats not a problem. i just want to know how to get rid of that ugly startup page and load my own htmls. do i need an ftp uploader for this? would it be handy?

thanks again for all your help guys

alrighty i got signed up at afraid.org

oh man thats confusing me ...

if you're on os x, transmit is an ace ftp client and textmate is the best editor i've ever used.

i got windows XP thanks though cbit.
heres a decent (free) ftp program for windows, i got it connected within 2 minutes: link

wow thanks energy giant

I do 1&1 hosting.

it's pretty cool

so, let me get this straight ...

the ftp client manages files on the server space?

so you can load files onto it like a hard drive?

ok i'm figuring this ftp internet thing out a little bit.

awesome.

yes..that sounds about right datathinner....though like i said, i have a girlfriend to assist me with all this, AND my website isnt even done yet!!!

cool got some stuff up.

you mind testing it for me energygiant? see if everything works on your end?
