--> Planning a cellar studio, did a quick layout in sketchup (funny friendly 3d app from google link ).

In particular it'd be ace if people with acoustics smarts could take a look at these plans and maybe make suggestions, identify problems etc.

I'm planning on fitting bass traps too (either bought or DIY) so thoughts about how these could be best employed would be superb tooo.

thanks!

ceiling is pretty low, only 223cm

How big is that in Earth Units?

heat/cold.. this is the weakest part of the plan: im planning to address this through careful door opening/closing and turning on/off of a little electric heater.

It seems very dry there, no signs of damp, nor dust (plenty of cobwebs at the moment though).

How big is that in Earth Units?

87.7952756 inches, roughly. or 4.87751531 cubits, exactly.

7.5 feet. not so bad.

know what i would do if i was you?!?!
put some circular traps up at all wall/ceiling corners.

you can buy or build them..

your ceiling will be fine. mine is about that if not a little lower. just don't put your monitors equidistant from floor to ceiling. they need to be a little higher or a little lower than the mid way point but do what works best for your listening position.

i have the giks bass traps. they work fine. but jdg has good ideas about the circular traps. also, i put some diffusers in the back of my room.. the hard foam auralex ones.. just to break up reflections. they say they are OK to paint but i painted some of mine and they smelled fucking toxic for 2 weeks. really bad.

but i think hanging a heavy curtain on the back wall would have been just as well. (or randomly gluing crushed styrofoam box inserts to the walls!)

i would just soften p the walls w/some panels or curtains or whatever and try to balance out the nodes w/basstraps. probably will be some trial and error w/it until you get it right.

you should check out this site (if you haven't already) for tons of info.. more than you want to know

having your speakers right up on the wall is a mistake, you're going to get phase issues right off the jump. They should be 1/3 or the way into the room. Other than that, put as much broadband absorption across parallel surface intersections as you can afford.

Ethan will agree with me.

also, i think your outfit is all wrong
beards are more acoustically absorptive. Shaved heads = too many reflections

Outfits actually must be carefully harmonized to avoid upsetting sound balance.

actually that's not entirely true. some speakers are find up close to the wall. you just have to adjust the bass response on the back of the monitor (if it has it) accordingly.

your listening position should be 1/3 of the way into the room. or something close to that. which means your chair.. where you sit.. should be 33% into the room. your speakers can sometimes work fine closer to the wall. mine are a foot or two away from the wall. my chair is almost 6 feet away from the wall.

38% !!!!! THIS AINT HANDGRANADES, THIS IS SCEINCE

so i miss-remembered the details. subpoena me!

anyway- when you have a small room i think the numbers can be fudged a little and trial and error is your friend.

oh no- all this advice is making me think my room will always be shit
symmetry? thats never going to happen
speakers away from the wall? what, like in the middle of the room? my room is less than 3x3m so theyre always going to be near a wall
listening position 1/3 of the way into the room? how am i supposed to reach the controls? actually given the small size of my room im probably not far off 1/3 of the way
