--> So I went out yesterday to A/B test some Adam A7's against some Dynaudio BM5A's.

I first went to Turnkey on Tottenham Court Road to see what sort of deal they would do and have a good listening session with a variety of music.

The guy put my first CD in the player [Talk Talk - Happiness Is Easy] and started to pump it out of the BM5A's as I knew what these sounded like and so I could get my ears 'tuned' to the space.

About halfway through the song, the sales assistant switched to the Adams and instantly the sound changed for the worst. The speakers were out of phase.

I said to the sales assistant that they were out of phase and said for him to check it out. He listened for a short while then started to tinker with the cables at the back of the amp. He suggested that it was because the Adam's were known for being 'proud' in the mid range but had great definition because of it.

Another assistant, who had meanwhile come into demonstrate somehting to another customer, asked me how I could tell.

Biting my lip as not to piss myself laughing, I suggested he listen to the stereo field and move his head out of the centre axis to listen to what happened and about the bass cutoff as well because of the cancellation.

The first assistant, after tinkering with the cables said, "try now, it sounds a lot better".

The speakers were still out of phase.

I said that speakers are either out of phase or in and these were definately out.

The assistant was now babbling on about how these speakers had been like this for ages and were their biggest sellers and...." so, what do you reckon? Do you want me to sort a pair for you?"

I pointed out to him that I couldnt buy speakers based on a test where they were out of phase and asked if he could sort it out. He replied that they were going to redo the listening room in a couple of weeks and so they wont bother until then.

I left saying that I was going to go to Digital Village.

When I got to Digital village in Croydon, they didnt have the speakers in store but made me a cup of tea and then we made arrangements for me to go back next week after the guy compiled a list of about 6 different monitors that he felt I should check out and would get the stock into the store.

So, Ian of DV in Croydon: thanks for excellent customer service and to Turnkey: I will never spend another penny with you evar.

yeah i feel fer yer. that place feels like a box shifting shop. they do have some good deals but only
if you already made your mind up. i find with most shops these days the people
do not know what they are doing. no offense to those that do. but really they are selling
stuff they know nothing about.

i should hook you up with me mate tom who sells studio stuff in london. he had orbitals
sampler for sale a while ago ;-)

I really wasnt expecting too much from Turnkey but this just made me PMSL. I couldnt believe that the assistant couldnt tell they were out of phase and most likely didnt have an idea what 'phase cancellation' meant anyway. I had to hold it in because he was so enthusiastic about selling me a pair despite me saying how terrible the Adam A7's sounded.

For all those stateside, turnkey is very much like guitar centre

I like going into their basement and playing with all the synths I'll never buy

yep. i had a couple bad experiences with turnkey on tottenham court road - so bad, in fact, that the manager sent me £70 worth of gift certificates. didn't make up for the insanely frustrating and time wasting fucknobbery i had to endure there.

i get nothing but champs at guitar center, ironically enough. that also might be that i rudely walk away from salespeople when they start acting like morons.

lol. there's a thread on gearslutz called "stupid things you've been told at Guitar Center". it's 30 or pages.

guitar center is sort of like walmart only they have higher turnover. average length of stay for an employee is 2 months or something. still, there should be people who know what the hell they are doing or at least honest enough to tell you when they don't.

it's definitely worth paying a little extra to deal w/people you are comfortable with, who treat you well and who of course know what they are talking about.

LOL, there's also a thread on GuitarGeek called "what's the stupidest thing you're heard at a music store" or something.

ugh: i guess you just need to be lucky with who you happen to be talking to (my brother would have known the score if he'd still been working at turkey).

i walked into guitar center once looking for an sm58. simple enough, i thought. i asked for it, and the guy said "NAH you don't want that. check out this other mic." and i literally said not one more word to him and walked out of the store.

cbit: I did actually ask if Alex [hello6am] still worked there and would have tried to see him but he doesnt [cant think why not?!!]

you should see what it's like in America, places like Guitar Center and Sam Ash are just 90% complete shit.
The help is aweful and mostly nonexistent, And unfortunately the decent and well educated sales staff tend to not stay as part of the staff at these places for long.
For me, when I plan to purchase a product that I will need extensive pre-sale comparisons of ie:monitors etc. I try to save just a little extra in order to patronize one of the smaller more service oriented and educated pro audio sales stores.
I feel for the amount of service and help I've gotten in places like this deserves the possible 50-100 extra dollars that it may cost.
And many times the prices are the same.

OHHHHHHHHH

I thought you said out of filets, which didn;t make any sense cuz those Adams are totally meaty in the midrange.

So, are you still interested in buying them?
