--> Hi Everybody!
In a few weeks I have to go work in Toronto for a few weeks. For a good portion of it I will be working by myself and so once I am done for the day I need something to do. I have only been to Toronto once when I was in 8th grade on a class trip (and I have to add that it was awesome because the hotel room I was in looked over the back/alley of a strip club) so I really have no idea what to do. Based on a map I'm sort of in the York University area, I don't know what that means really.
So yeah, cool places to go, cool things to see, funny things, weird things, "Fugitives and Refugees" type stuff, I'll have my Nord modular along, maybe a jam? I don't even know.
Thanks!
And here is what Nordy thinks about going to Toronto:

yup. toronto is a fun place. can't say i've been to too many sports bars or been to any hockey games, but you can do that if you want. york university is far away from downtown - not even on the subway line (yet). transit pass will be a must. the last time i was up there i couldn't wait to leave!

I always drink local stuff in Toronto. I prefer the stuff thats made locally wherever I am. You want to be drinking:

Steam Whistle - A clean pilsner. Really good on a hot day.
Amersterdam - Nut Brown is alright, I prefer the Blonde. There's others I haven't had.
Mill St - These are all really good. There's one I think called Porterhouse Ale that I remember being especially good.

Checkout Kensington Market / Chinatown some night.

Dear everyone,
Thanks for the info!
Mr. Subset, "Fugitives and Refugees" is the title of an odd book by Chuck Palahniuk (who wrote Fight Club) that is sort of a tour guide of odd things in Portland, it is rather hard to describe other than imagine the guy who came up with Fight Club writing a tour guide (http://www.amazon.com/Fugitives-Refugees-Portland-Oregon-Journeys/dp/1400047838).
I will be there from May 11 to 28th, but because others I'm working with are there until the 16th, that will be more when I'm free to do whatever I want.
Drop the lime seems like it would be cool but I'll be unloading a stupid truck that night. For this particular job I'll be sitting around making sure some technical stuff keeps working at some exhibit thing, but I have video editing work to do, so that will take most of my time.
I will check into the transit pass, I always like going to random places. Can I assume I probably won't get beat up anywhere, right? I've lived in Cleveland, Chicago, and Portland and not had a problem wandering around in the middle of the night, I imagine I can do that in Toronto?
And the reason I'm over by York University is beacause it is somewhat close to the location of the exhibit I'm traveling with.
I'll try to get some field recordings of some hockey bars.
Thanks!

Ah, a book. OK then.
Seeing as you're not here for an entire month, you might want to do some math regarding the transit pass. A monthly unlimited pass is ~$99CAN, but you can also get weekly ones, I think around $30. A single ride (one way) is $2.75, so figure out how often you think you'll use it and whether it's worth it. Or maybe you're all-expenses-paid from work and don'thave to worry about budgeting?? If that's the case, just get the monthly one, it'll be less hassle.

Also, oxymoron gives good link. I was going to suggest picking up the free weeklies, but looking online is less garbage-making.
+1 for Kensington market, at night or during a weekend daytime.
'Exhibits' - hmm. There are lots of art galleries, especially on Queen west (heading east from the gladstone as someone suggested).

Wandering around - I think you should be as OK as any other big city at night, just don't be stupid obviously. You won't get beat up, you'll get stabbed or shot. Welcome, and have fun. No really, I'm sure you'll be fine. Just try not to look too innocent.

Anyway, I'm sure you'll find lots to see and do.

LOL. The parts of "Fugitives and Refugees" that stuck out to me were Chuck's list of places in Portland to have sex in public, clubs with glory holes, places to wife swap, places where the fetishists hang out if you want to join in or just watch ... oh and the spot where Matt Groenig drew bart simpson in the sidewalk.

He's a vertiable cornucopia of Sex in Portland.
Also, as I learned from Caddis, apparently the only author to have his name removed from Powell's author signature/grafiiti posts (he wrote something naughty).

I've been in Toronto for almost 2 weeks now... Incidentally ol' Chucky was here giving a free reading or something but I was working at the same time so I didn't get to see it.
Toronto seems pretty sweet, I haven't had the free time I'd like (10-14 hr days since I arrived with no days off, rockin!) but I have gotten some cool recordings of various things that I will post when I get home.
I'm hoping to drag the mainstream sorority girl I work with to Le Petit Dejeuner tomorrow, but I can't make any promises since I have to pack up this exhibit tomorrow.
