man, i have a instrumental version of the 'chronic 2001' album.....and teh 'skit' music is soooooo good, without the silly talking of course.

I also think it's funny when band members rag on each other during transitions, such as mimi and alan of Low. Good natured ragging, of course, not dysfunctional band ragging.

Oh man.. you have to see Jarvis' band. The Killer Whales... little skinny shirtless kids ragging one each other all the time. Great stuff... sometimes embarassing if you know them though,...

is that a music show, or some other kind of show?

"JD's gafflin" on that ice cube record is classic.

I always used to love the stupid ninja movies that Genius/GZA sampled for "liquid swords" for their transitions.

im going to chop off your arm.....you ready?

i sort of figured there'd be a fence in regards to the seamlessness issue. I chose to recommend it assuming that you're playing off your laptop--and people aren't ware of what's going on. with eric / hecanjog, he's got guest instrumentalists on stage with him and he does really beautiful ambient stuff too. thankfully ramp that night was pretty warm and into it, but I've also seen cases other times of people leaving in groups when there's too much silence and nothing else going on.

The best non-seamless set I saw was by the swedish gameboy artist.. covox? i think. he told little stories and jokes and insulted americans while he switched cartidges. the place was roaring with laughter and a good time was had by all.

in the end it's your call but you should aim for seamless when you start out. if you need silence you can just turn down the sound at any point
a small pause is fine i think. if people leave because of silence then they were probably going to leave anyways. i think more people leave a venue when the music is bad than if their is a 5 second pause between tracks.

nice article!

It just seems like techno/raves had seamless sets because it was such a sonic onslaught and you didn't want to kill the party ... now it seems that the exact opposite is true, seems more like seamless lounge music.

Even the DJ's I see now aren't all that seamless

I could rant about how a lot of djs today can't beatmatch, but it's a losing battle.

I've just accepted it...and if they know how to keep the party going otherwise, it's great by me.

and as I mentioned in the article, you should research the place you're playing at in advance so you can see what's considered to be the norm...

Oh, don't mind us, quantazelle...we're just acting like old farts.

I definitely think there is a difference between a "rock show" and an "electronic/dj set" style show and that is where we get these differences of opinion. And like you said, it depends on the venue and people's expectations.

very cool article
many thanks for sharing!!
