djugel - why should i play a synth over my tracks when i could do a totally improvised live set w/the mouse or controller? and what if my tracks have no synths? what if they have no notes? what if the leads/melodies etc are made up of FX and frequencies?

i'm not chasing some 90's aesthetic rave dream. i just don't care. if the music is good enough no one else will either.

If your music (and Diety status) is as good as Autechre's or Matmos', then by all means turn off the lights.

But for mere mortals, I think MrFlameGuy has a point... as long as you know the clownsuit/dumbasswig/badsittingdancer thing has been done already.

lol. i'd rather not see someone essentially "posing" w/a synth or whatever even if the music sucked. it would just be even more annoying.

Totally!

Faking a performance is like putting lipstick on a pig. Or putting fishnet stockings on jdg.

Just something to bop along to ... swim your head around to.

I didn't mean that you have to be into the rave aesthetic ... I mean the convenience of the method of performing. (no-one looking at you... pressing buttons on a machine).

get a controller... something. If this music you speak of is so groundbreaking beyond normal comprehension.. I'm going to call you out and say let's hear it.

why is performance which is ancient the new thing as opposed to looking like checking email when email isn't that old...to me the new thing is a lack of performance....

I'd much rather see someone posing than not doing anything. In fact, posing is often more entertaining than a "real" performance.

This is exactly what has been driving me nuts!!!^^what p said^^^^ It's not new! It's almost been 10 years now of laptops being standard.

How many here are real music followers??? I bet the majority are. Remember how a specific style only used to last 3 years at most? WTF happened?? Why are things not phasing out .. or evolving? It's because people are still convinced that if it happened after the millenium .. it must be new.

That's fucked up.

It's still all just Timbaland, Electro and "sound art" to my ears

post deleted because I don't know why I'm arguing.

added: nice work quantazelle

hm, there is a big difference between performance and presentation. most live electronic music these days is the latter, and as liz points out in her article, extremely functional.

i would argue that dead air isn't nearly as important as energy and presence. low key rumbling drones are just as ineffective for some club owners as completely dead air. i think it is just as good to understand what the promoter/owner expects or has in mind.

it's very rare that you see someone engaging their instrument in a way that is improvisatory and creates sound in the act of doing. samples are triggered with keypads, they are not sounds 'created' by the performer, and don't have the presence and integrity of those that are. the cheat of having a USB slider board doesn't work for me - someone flailing around their laptop for the sake of the 'performance' doesn't carry much weight.

i think this is also a difference between the people making the music and the people perceiving it. in many ways the music makers aren't responsible for the reaction of the audience, especially if the end goal is the music.

but if the end goal is entertaining, then that's quite a different path altogether.

lol. i'm not talking about my music. just making a point in general about music vs. fluff. and i guess playing the devils advocate and expressing my thoughts on it all since i really just don't care if someone has a laptop and appears to be checking his email and isn't playing midi guitar synth.

to me.. it's the difference between a band like KISS who has a ridiculous stage show and all that vs. a band that actually writes good songs and can play their instruments but are 40 and fat and greasey.

sometimes i like to see stuff blow up and crazy lights but when it comes down to it i'd rather hear good music. i don't need to be wowed with the novelty of watching someone play midi bongo's that trigger ableton clips. i don't think you should create some excuse to get a controller if you don't need one.

besides.. i need one hand free to drink beer.

agreed! beer me!

Not saying it's gotta be fireworks... just something ... something. Y'know? Some soul.

But if all people want is static noise to prove their hate against "the machine"... then I don't think I'm the close minded one.

yah! internet!
