I'm not a violent man, but I just want to slap everyone I ever see wearing a Confederate flag because they think it's a real rock'n'roll thing to do. It's not cool, it doesn't mean you're an anti-authoritarian, and it sure as shit ain't rock'n'roll.*
What you really tell the world when you wear this icon is that you think slavery is such a good idea you're willing to go to war over it, and if some damn Yankee wants to take your slaves away they'll have to pry them from your cold, dead fingers.
On a lighter note, I'm happy to report that the South Postpones Rising Again For Yet Another Year. Hallelujah!

and the civility goes both ways...but at least the black population has a legitimate reason to hate my ancestors.

i think the thing i hate most about being a white guy is that tacit agreement every other white guy seems to assume i'm in on - the whole "we're all a bunch of racist-sexist-homophobic assholes but we'll keep it quiet until the non-whites, women & homosexuals are out of earshot" - you wouldn't believe some of the shit other white guys have assumed i wanted to be a part of

interesting thread. i don't know much about the history of slavery in the us.
I guess the confederate flag means more to some people than just support of slavery. But when infamous symbols get adopted because they're somehow 'cool', that gives me the creeps too.

preserving my heritage: i place no value on that. Not my heritage or anyone else's.
I think governments in europe are making a big mistake at the moment with schemes to foster 'diversity'. Ultimately these schemes are fostering division. Financial support has made it possible for ethnic groups to avoid integrating with the rest of society.

The civil war having everything to do with slavery is a large misconception, and more something that is fed down our throats in grade school propaganda to make us love our government and current situation in life. It was completely over moral and economic disputes. Freeing the slaves wasn't really the purpose, they just didn't want them around anymore. The fact is, most northerners at the time only slightly viewed slavery as being immoral, Abraham Lincoln even in one of his letters was talking about shipping the slaves back to Africa, he just viewed slavery as immoral. Also, the north was more industry, while the south was large plantations that had the room and food to feed slaves. Slavery in the northern industry didn't profit as much as the southern environment. The war was more over economic concerns between the southern states and the northern states, and the rejection of a larger federal government.
Although, the symbol of the confederate flag has become one of racism, and seeing as symbols change, I do agree with your argument. I didn't really know it was rock and roll thing.. maybe with Guns and Roses and AC/DC fans... but thats you know.. more Cock Rock than it is Rock n' Roll.

I've also experienced the 'straight white guys while others are out of earshot' syndrome. I try to call them out whenever I can, usually by pretending I don't know what they're getting at, making them explain it in plainer terms. But usually they'll just tell me to lighten up. I can honestly say I've never gone along with it, but I'm afraid I have to admit I've just let it go before, turned away or not responded.
The 'cool kids' who are adopting this imagery are usually (it seems to me) trying to prove that they can manipulate signs to their own ends. Unfortunately, it seems to often be young people who think that they are the first to discover that meaning is subjective rather than inherent in the symbols, but fail to see that a collective historical investment in certain symbols can cause them to be (semi?)permanently partnered with very specific interpretations and/or historical baggage.
Or maybe they're just ignorant, and think it means "Bo & Luke 4evah".

When I was younger, all the people that I ever saw wearing the confed flag usually smelled of piss or "odeur de l'humidité chien". It has left the lasting impression that southerners are piss smelling dirty unwashed clothes pikey fuckers and covered in car oil.
I even thought Daisy Duke must reek as well.

americans tend to scapegoat the south with 'america's racism', but it's really seethrough. racism is something that changes subtly from region to region. like in Los Angeles, the zoning and social services are racist, pretty obviously so. something like a disproportionate fire department coverage, or a hospital in a black area shutting down is a bigger problem than some poor white person flying a confederate flag.
