--> How hard would it be to reproduce something like ronin
in a program like reaktor. (in fact, I would use reaktor)
And if you could, then would it have the same exact results, musically?

Ok- I admit, at this moment the question is purely academic because it would take me ages to program something interesting.
But, I'm curious, how do micro parts affect the sound in a modular environment?

P.S.
I'm thinking about purchasing reaktor, but I would probably just use it to produce stuff thats already out there somewhere (like the audiodamage stuff).
Is it really true (reaktor users?) that when you've went and bought reaktor, you dont need any other synth, effect... ever again?

it doesn't look that complicated. use wireless connections to do the routing is the only trick in implementing modular stuff.

reaktor takes a lot of cpu though, for this kind of thing at least. its great for sampling.

the thing to note though is reaktor really isn't designed for projects like this. take this example: you want to fm a saw with a sine, then filter it. you could build up a modular environment that would let you route saw to sine, sine to saw, then to filter. but why bother, just connect everything directly and make a smaller, simpler synth that gets done what you want to get done. when you have your own macros you can build synths in a couple of minutes. why spend a month making the ultra synth, when you could make a synth for every occasion.

this has been my experience with reaktor. if you want to make music you're better off simplifying and not thinking about large programming projects like that. just make what you need when you need it.

with synthedit there is a bunch of crap out there that I would never use, unless I made said crap. I have turned my back on synthedit plugs made by other people before as well (or my nose up, whatever) but I am still impressed by what some have done with it. And I am even more stoked about what I can do with it for my own projects.
>> as far as loud noise, cpu usage...that is the fault of the creator of that particular plug, not synthedit. I guess thats why SE has a bad name, because it is open to anyone to make plugs. Its all about what you do with it, just like any other modular environment.

thank you to a lot of people
for the comments on cpu hogging versus efficiency, endless possibilities versus instant use, spensiv reaktor versus some of the fairer priced plugs

I guess reaktor fills a different need
as yghartsyrt said, apples and oranges?

brings up the question; is there such a thing as an academic pricing reduction or whatsit called, for reaktor5?
Ive seen it on american sites, but I wonder if this deal can be found in europe

obviously this depends on the user, but I for one haven't used anything else for synthesis since I stopped using Generator and Rebirth which I guess was like 1999. Reaktor and Cool Edit. occasionally I use other stuff (an old hardware synth here and there, microphones, instruments, etc), but no other software.

and I don't see cpu consumption as being a problem. it's something you work with, if you have to. it's rare that I'm pushing 98% cpu with Reaktor, and if I'm going to use one of those ensembles for live performance then I just knock the sample rate down to 44.1 or 36 or whatever it is. not a problem. and if you're a beginner builder and you're hitting your cpu ceiling chances are you're just being inefficient or greedy. I still run Reaktor 2 on my old celeron 466 sometimes.

there's an academic price for reaktor.

I vote for Reaktor. It sounds damn good and w/ modern computers, the cpu is not a problem. Checkout this reaktor blog: link

It's a great place to get you started. Plus, the fun of reaktor is taking parts of your favorite synths, effects, and easily putting your own thing together.

synthedit is crap. i have yet to hear/use anything from that app that is worth anything. this is just an opinion, but it renders the sound like a cheap 3D rendering program from the 90s would. just saying, it sounds like crap..

reaktor at least has a nice shine to it and doesn't sound totally thin and crappy, CPU hogging as it might be.

plus if you're totally awesome, you can get around a lot of CPU issues with cleverness. besides.. who the hell wants to build a workstation in reaktor? big synths should be reserved for hardware, IMO
