I've had this idea to do live looping through Ableton with instruments, but I never found a good option to make it easy ... until I saw the Kid Beyond youtube video. Man that got me thinking. So I saved up and bought the FCB1010 and thought it would be all easy ... and boy was I wrong! I got so freaking frustrated with it, then put it away for a few months cause my girlfriend and I were moving downtown to the SE side. So after we got settled in, I went back to the FCB, and joined the yahoo group for the 1010, which was a big help!
Damn there's a steep learning curve, but once it's all midi programmed that thing is amazing! I haven't gotten the expression pedals down yet though. I'm using it solely to do live looping via Ableton. My buddy plays the drum kit, hand drums, bass, and sax, and I do the electronics, tabla, sitar, guitar, didgeridoo, and other noise makers. All we need is my Mbox's 2 inputs, one being a line in, and the other using an SM57. We just finished our first track yesterday that I'll put up as soon as my neighbor's wireless internet connection I'm "using" gives me a fast enough signal. We're sounding kinda like Kruder & Dorfmiester, cause Nathan's musical input is more funky and sexy, while I'm more ambient and downtempo.
In this first track, we begin with a long looping pad, then we throw in a pre-made drum loop to keep us on tempo. Then, I loop the main synth lick, following with Nathan looping the bass. Next he loops a beatboxed lick, and then I make 3 tabla loops (2 simple patterns and one complex). Add in the Soundhack Spectral Shapers/pluggo plugins to effect certain parts, and bring certian loops down for the breakdown, then build it back up with variations of the patterns. I think by the end of the summer we'll be ready for live shows here in PDX.
I've found the hardest thing is to keep on beat, but that just takes practice. So every Sunday we get together to jam n' loop. Anyone else using the FCB1010???

I just bought one. Not looking forward to programming it, but it's not really necessary for my live sets...yet.

Yeah, I mostly am going to be using it to turn racks on and off in ableton...so hopefully that shouldn't be too hard to figure out.
I like my boss RC2 for looping, though I guess if I want to sync with people, it might be a problem. Marc has been raving about augustus loop, so I might look into that.

i would like to get one eventually. i would like to use it to scroll up and down the master trigger section in session view and then trigger parts etc. i keep thinking there might be a cheaper and easier way to do this with another foot pedal maybe. i probably won't use it for all the routing options like you guys. i just can't seem to find any other midi pedalboards for cheaper. and it does so much else.

I use it with Mobius link for looping. I'd love to get it set up in ableton though. Mobius is nice(and very very free!) but there's no limiter so it's hard to do without getting digital distortion.

The entire internet seems to think the FCB1010 is impossible to use, but I don't think so. I've had mine for about 3 or 4 months, and I've been very happy with the way it works (although I was unhappy that the photosheild on one expression pedal broke off and I had to hot glue it back on). I'd be very curious to know what exactly you find difficult. Maybe I'm just not doing anything complex with it, but I think I understand how to program it to do pretty much anything that it can do. If anyone would describe a specific thing that gives them trouble, I'd be interested in hearing it.

i have one, it's definately a pretty rugged and useable piece of midi gear, i agree the programming is retarded at first. laptop doesn't seem to be able to take the input/output latency even without looping now so it seems like too much of a hassle.
does anyone have any recommended Loop Pedals out there?

There is an editor for fcb1010 GOOGLE for it, makes the programming quite easy.

EVERYONE!!!! It is not impossible at all. Just give it the time needed and join the FCB1010 yahoo group. They've got text docs that really help. The manual is a bitch that comes in the box. Don't be discuraged, cause now I'm loving the fucking thing. Works like a charm!!

Yeah, I only use it with the editor, to the point where i've never even read the manual. I got it to control a Quadraverb, a PODxt and Live for live shows and it works fine.

great thread. it´d be nice to hear how you make use of it, how you have set it up so its easy for you to do what youre doing. i dont mean the technical part necissarily, more like how have you organized your liveset.
