Good day,
I moved into the apartment that I'll be sharing with my girlfriend for the summer at the beginning of this month. I finished up my degree in Dec. and decided to cancel my graduation because if I want my immigration stuff to go through (I'm from Texas originally) I have to be registered in courses. The folks are paying for rent and classes so I went for it (a bit of my dad's family moved up here in the 70s, my dad got his landed immigrant status in the 70s and came back in the mid-90s and renewed it :-P )) My load of courses is as follows, this month is spontaneous improvisation thru dance, June is Documentary film, and July is New York Painters form 1900-1990. Should be an easy going summer.
Now onto the studio. For a while my girlfriend was using a keyboard stand with a piece of plywood (which was used as a closet shelf) as as desk. I felt I had to clean some of my shit off my desk to accommodate her. So where she is sitting was where the big monitor was, we put that on her shady desk for movie time etc. Before we had to lug the coach in front of the desk to the right and it was bitch to move it to and fro...and we were like 3 feet from the screen. I scooted all my gear to the right.
I've given up the monitor and will just be relying on my laptop as a monitor which I now prefer as I type this. The bluetooth keyboard will be unused for a while, but the trackball will have to stay for the mousing around days. I've recently got a liveset going and when I practice live stuff I put my lappy up on the left of the audio interface on the neoprene keyboard cover. Works out very nicely. The monome 40h is oh so fabulous for improvisational sets and I'm going gaga every night I practice.
The one thing that really bugs me is having the monitors to the left of me all the time, but since I'm in an apartment I'll be under headphones for the majority of the time. I'll use the monitors to check this or that, but all in all I'll be a headphone man for the summer.
I'm pretty happy with the setup and I'm really happy to sacrifice the big monitor for a bit more space and simplicity. Relaxing summer is around the corner I hope. Hopefully y'all are absorbing some of those summer rays. Enjoy :o)
