I'm currently putting together the third EP for my solo band, We're Not The Cool Kids link I have the following five songs:
* Ghosts. Typical We're Not The Cool Kids stuff. Pretty first half, harsh second half.
* Number 34. Screamo. Sort of.
* Crafternoon. A Gibson Les Paul, a practice amp, me shout singing, and a room.
* These Hands Will Never Be Guns. More typical stuff, except with a rave ending.
* Panic Attack. Non-tech Meshuggah worship in 7/4.
So, in short, I have five songs that I've written over the last few months and that are really quite disparate in style. This is kind of OK, because that's sort of what the band is all about. But at the same time, I'm worried that no person but me could possibly like all of these songs, given that they are so different.
Does anyone else run up against similar multiple-musical-personality problems?
I am loathe to start separate projects because a) the styles I am interested in change (I will probably never again write a song that sounds like Panic Attack) and b) getting together new releases from each project would take years, not months.
What is doubly weird is that this problem is most often encountered by bands on their first release not their third. By record three, they have usually incorporated all the crazy styles and influences of record one into a sort of sound that is consistent.
Why am I such a freak?

Transitions are your friend...whether it be a little riff that connects the two songs, or a little interlude. They can work wonders to bridge songs that sound completely different.
Also, contrast between songs never hurt anyone as long as there are common elements between them.

it is good to be a freak. Yes, I have the same "problem". Have you ever listened to early Cornelius? SOOOO much more interesting than his later albums where all the songs fit in together.

i have the same multiple-musical-personalities problem, maybe most people do, i think its the nature of art. music sometimes decides what it wants to be, a piece gets out of hand because it wants to be something else than what you want it to be. don't worry, let it happen. accidental or unintended things are often better. there's an old saying: "consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds"

I've actually listened to all the songs in sequence now, and it's not so bad. Thanks for the encouragement, guys.
