I went on safari on VIRB.
Found a coupla you chaps on there.
Really enjoying the customizable friendly/ergonomic interface much more than the ol ugly-ass advertisment-ridden myspace.
Most importantly--The download feature.
This (I feel) is the most important feature of a music profile on a social network...
the immediate publish/download feature.
For immediate consumption by the public.
(not unlike this site)
on another note:
I think i'm beginning to have a problem with said social networks.
Spending too much time on the net lately.
Need help soon.
Think i'll fill up the kiddie pool and drink a sixer for memorial day weekend-have a good ol analog time in the yurt.
peaces.

quantazelle:
verdict: yay.
i think it has potential. it is another social network that is not super-populated.
it is not myspace...
it has the opportunity to become something else*
--it already seems to be attracting people who are more into media and aesthetic.
which is important to electronic musicians like ourselves...at least in audience attention.
which leads me to rebuttle on another comment---
nagrom: how is facebook superior to either site?
i started an account, joined a local geographic network and thought it sucked.
it focuses far too much on demographic, education, (political/religious viewpoints) WTF?
that's kinda intrusive...felt like i was being probed...
and the interface is about as cold as any news forum out there...sorry, i like color and sparkles and sprinkles.
maybe i haven't perused/used it long enough--but i'm not concerned with doing so...rather spend my time on my computer writing music.
i'm more interested in something
right out of the box...simple enough that i don't have to spend alot of time on to get going.
(and by the way...this is just one man's opinion.)
i could care less about which social network to choose...they are all sort of a necessary evil--
in order to reach an audience outside of
one's own backyard.
DIY publication has changed the climate of media and social networks (for now)
are a way to ping an audience who has no idea your material/media is even out there.
and fire engines are red.
(stepping down off of the soapbox)

With social networking sites like myspace and virb allowing some mp3 downloads and an artist profile, along with the very important networking aspects... what role does an oldschool website have (ie no advertisements, custom layouts, all the mp3s but without the networking parts)..
I know the oldschool pages certainly can look better, but if the point is to get the music out there, is it worth the time and effort?

i think so. especially since, if you wanted to, u could generate some sort of revenue by putting a cms on it and advertisements. (yuck)

I'm not interested in revenue from a website. Discussion is great and motivational in many ways. I miss that with a static page, and end up hanging out on forums and such. I'm wondering if the days of individuals maintaining a single person site is over... perhaps as a portfolio and place to store my album.
I've never really found out what I should do with my website. I wanted to do a circuit bending/experimental electronics website, and then some kind of odd DIY music podcast, but it takes more time than I have right now. Perhaps instead of building communities like that I should give up and try participate in whats already going on out there... then again, there isn't a regular circuit bendy podcast that I'm aware of.
Signed up for virb anyway, username MagpieIndustries. it's lonely with no friends!

dach...you raise some really great issues concerning the classical "static" website vs the newer social network.
the idea of a portfolio is quite possibly the most realistic way of looking at it.
also, a way to handle all of your "business"--i.e. DIY sales--in the background...
using a social network for a teaser...and then allowing the audience/consumer to purchase an album via your website.
*
which raises another issue:
the way that we consume media...
i'm not quite sure if i want to parcel out tracks via itunes..or other mp3 vendors.
however, due to the publics demand for one track here, one track there and not the whole "album" concept...
then the artist is starting to become forced (in order to make revenue) to parcel out and distribute in this piecework format...
I'll just give my live sets away for free for now(via my backend portfolio)
...in hopes that when i put out meh LP that i can have enough of a fan base to buy physical
copies when they are produced....without having to barter through a third party.
sorry if this is bad form--it seems that i've rambled off subject.
peas.

I do social networking + I have a real website. The website serves as "home-base" and all of the different social-networks (Last.fm, flickr, myspace, facebook, virb) serve as satellites; communities into which I dip my personality, if you will.
Facebook, from an interface and usability point of view, is a better website. Fewer clicks, more features, easier operations, more Ajax. Editing or adding anything to my Virb (and my Myspace, for that matter) is so painful that I simply don't do it. I'd rather maintain a website than deal with those interfaces.
If you like glitter, then clearly it's not for you.

mirm: i like your phrase 'backend portfolio'. :-)
I'm not sure the piecemeal distribution you mention is such a problem though, especially if you are distributing live sets (one very long piece rather than a 3-4min song).
Piecemeal distribution can be used in a very good format aswell. I have given it a bit of thinking. With luck we might see podcasting, remixing and RSS merge in future. Instead of creating long, complicated and single songs (akin to creating static, complete web1.0 websites) the artists could concentrate on creating short loops and samples. With this content being produced rapidly, we could subscribe to a bunch of favourite artists, and get their latest work delivered automatically to a 'remix pool'. The remix pool would always be really fresh, and contain loops and melodies and so on that can be mashed together in a realtime manner with something like ableton. I think it'd be neat.
thoughts?

Looks a bit like the cartoon network, but I've signed up and will give it a shot! thanks for the link, hopefully this is something like I've been imagining, it's always great to discover new stuff. If it's still in development thats great, better chances to get in there and help make it cool.

i'm not sure...i just sorta perused a bit and signed up as 'mirm'
i have a few loops up there from some bouncy techy stuff i did a long time ago..
i have a slow pirated connection so i haven't gotten too far into it..
as far as i can tell the interface is sort of like a primitive acid 1.0...loop slicing--copy/paste basic edits..
cool concept--i'll have to get a little more time with it..
i'm really glad you have found an interest...i'll give it more attention when i have some more time
on my hands..

Yo VIrb sucks. Can it be that you cannot comment on blogs or songs, but only on peoples profiles??!
