--> So, I've been struggling to write music with solid vocal harmonies. I've been listening to a lot of the beach boys lately and I'm wondering how they do that. Anyone know any good resources that would have scores or something I could look at to learn more about the chord progressions they use?

um... Bee Gees, anyone? i picked up some disco-era Bee Gees 45's at the thrift the other day... wow. vocal harmonies... and on 33rpm it almost makes the falsetto seem natural and you really get to enjoy (and analyse) all the subtlety and nuance of the harmonies. super-sexy. in particular: love you inside and out b/w i'm satisfied.

fredo and palestrina are also inspiring. and ELO. yeah

if a song comes on the radio while that you know, try harmonizing with it.

practice makes perfect.

There are actually a lot of vocal transcriptions for Beach Boy harmonies available on the web. The best is Beach Boys Vocal Harmonies.

If you really want to dig deep into the Beach Boys, Cabin Essence is an insanely rich resource. It's got chord charts for every song and a great series called "Mind of Brian" (in the Writings section) that dissects a number of classic songs in very great detail.

I prefer the super close, dense sound of harmonies from earlier american pop, like the Andrews Sisters. Those ladies had it down. I mean the number of complex chords in their songs is just like bam bam bam bam. Its like any miles davis fast horn progression times ten and in a cute dress.

damn, thanks ochre!

you mean "otterfan"?

and thx to the otters!

oh yeah

thanks otterfan, i guess

just kidding, of course.

otterfan, you're a neverending fount of pertinent information, and i always learn volumes from your posts.
