As some of you know may already know I seem to have bad luck with jobs! I started a new job just over 2 months ago. The job title was "Graphic Designer/Artist" at a fishing store of all places! The interview was my longest interview ever, lasting for 2 hours! While my girlfriend waited outside! I wasn't even all that keen on getting it due to its location and the pay was low and I also had an interview for a better paid position at a university.
So anyway I agree to the job but the store manager tells me that they are waiting for brand new apple macs to arrive and that these won't be here for another month and asks if i mind doing general IT tasks in the meantime, i agree. So I'm doing really boring stuff in Excel and I'm also selling stuff for them on ebay!
Tthe brand spanking new apple macs arrived a month ago but I've since been told that the tasks I'm doing are more PC based and so I've stuck with my current machine, one of these tasks is to update 1 of their many websites, which I did expect but I also expected to be designing their flagship website, which I was told I would be doing bt the store manager at the interview , his words were that's its cheaper and more reliable than contracting an external company to do it, but then on Thursday of last week the general manager was in a long meeting and i found out that he was actually speaking to an external web design agency about doing the website, so I'm left wondering, did anyone in the office here actually read my CV?!
After discussing this with the guy beside me he actually said that he didn't know what they employed me for! He and the other new guy are doing all the design work for their numerous printed catalogues at the moment while I'm just getting odd jobs here and there and updating a website that I doubt anyone even uses as I've been adding products to it that people can't even order or don't have prices at the moment! The store manager for that business also doesn't seem to care what i'm doing, I've only physically seen him 3 times, he rarely replies to email and when i phone he's either busy of out fishing, whenever i ask him questions he tells gives me apathetic responses, "that'll do", "that's fine", "don't worry about that" etc...
Like many offices, tea and coffee is drunk throughout the day. Tea and coffee comes out the budget but milk does not. The general manager usually brings a 4 pint carton in every Monday but moans about other people in the office taking milk buying responsibility. Fair enough. He was away for a week's fishing holiday in the USA and Mexico so i bought milk for everyone, which all got used before he got back. Of course as soon as he gets back he says to me "I bet you didn't even buy milk" There are 5 people in the office and I was the only one who bought milk while he was away!
The 4 pints are almost up so today i decided to go without milk in my tea, while i was making my black tea the boss made a comment about the dangerously low milk level and i said i would buy some tomorrow, to which my boss made a gesture with his hand imitating the size of a really small milk carton saying " i bet you buy 1 that size!"
So on top of that, he also accused me of not washing up behind me in the kitchen. Now the drying area is small and there's no rack to put plates in. So if someone washes a plate and leaves it to try it takes up most of the drying area. So it gets crowded pretty quickly cos no one puts stuff back in the cupboards (There is also a dishwasher but I've been told not to use it!) So, I have been washing up but cos there's never any room in the drying area I was just leaving cutlery and crockery in the sink. But after being repeatedly told to wash up behind me I've started tidying away everything in the drying area There's another new guy who was working downstairs at first but recently got moved upstairs to our office so in his first day up here the general manager set some ground rules like "wash up behind you" the new guy said he thought that would have been obvious and my boss replied "it isn't for some people" and looked over at me! (One of the other ground rules is that we aren't allowed to shit in the toilet beside our office!!! cos its next to the kitchen, instead we need to use the one downstairs in the warehouse - which is right underneath where they are currently constructing a mezzanine floor!)
So...I've become ultra-tidy in the kitchen, but I've noticed that the other new guy isn't washing up behind him and is often leaving unwashed stuff in the sink and I get the feeling that its only a matter of time before I'm accused of his mess!
I also left a metro newspaper in the kitchen one day thinking someone else would want to read it but instead my boss moaned that I was making a mess and said "do you think I have time to read newspapers before binning it"
It should be noted that my boss isn't really nasty when he makes these comments, he's more sarcastic than sardonic but he's made enough of these comments for me to know that he means it.
So I'm left in a bit of a dilemma...it seems like my job description has changed, I'm bored, my boss doesn't seem to be my biggest fan, do i speak up about doing the website of just look for a new job, I am actually waiting on word back from 1 job this week. I haven't heard a peep from that other interview i mentioned though, which was 4 weeks ago so I'm guessing i never got it, of course i should phone, but I feel its a lost cause even though i fitted the job description perfectly...
Stay tuned and I'll blog about some of the more funnier aspects of the job soon!

Explain to your boss (have numbers on paper, and perhaps a graph) that all this trouble about the milk can be solved. Calculate the amount of time people spend discussing the milk shortages. Explain to the boss how much time is wasted. Bosses understand one thing very well, time=money. The cost of staff time (salary per minute wasted) is vastly higher than the cost of milk. Present these numbers to the boss, and you have free milk and no problems. And a thankful boss. You can probably save hundreds of dollars this way.
As to your job specs and the website, just do whatever it is you want to do, and then show them. Thats called being pro-active and showing initiative, and even the most retarded boss will be delighted. You can probably ask for a pay rise after that.
Remember, if the boss isn't telling you clearly what to do, just work for them, and show him how useful you are.

in to every life, a little rain must fall - and a crap job every once in a while
i used to work for a guy that would call my name & whistle like i was a dog - that was fun
also had a boss who came into the job one day smoking a big fat stinky cigar. he asked me if the smoke was bugging me, and i honestly replied that, now that he mentioned it, yes, it was. then he told me, word for word, i shit you not "Too bad, it's my store, so fuck you!"
ah, memories.
ever try a little freelance? i've found it to be better than a real job myself, recent blogging to the contrary excepted, of course. and i leave my tea mug in the sink all the time, no worries.

Jeez, you couldn't write this stuff if you tried.
Get out of there.
You have the skills to look for a better job elsewhere.

i'd do just what dach said. even if they reject your spec website you could still use it in your portfolio when looking for a better job and making it will keep your skills from rusting.
also, when someone says those sarcastic remarks to you, just speak up for yourself and be honest. tell him - no i didn't make that mess. no, i bought milk while you were gone, etc. he's wrong, so tell him so, that's all.
but still, good luck with finding a better job.

all jobs have downsides, so dont be in too much of a hurry to change... sounds like it could work out nicely for you (doing some design and mac access etc). you have nice possibilities there.

Leave cos honestly i think that they want to get rid of you anyways. I mean if you have no real job to do there anyways and if the boss is picking at you, i think it reads clearly.

you should call back that university job you were "perfect for", cause in my experience most institutions like that takes FOREVER hiring. sounds like they're just looking for a reason to fire you... if you're a fairly good employee, they won't be able to wait around that long, so they'll lay you off but make it sound like firing. i don't think you can be fired for not buying milk-- especially if you don't use it and at that point file for unemployment and that my friend is an opportune time to book two weeks worth of shows accross the country and tour. yes.

Sounds like a hassle. Little things like milk buying etc can grow out of all proportion and totally do your head in.

i don't think they're trying to get rid of me cos they've given me a lot of work to do, especially over the last week - what i've been doing lately seems a bit backward though, hmm - taking info from the catalogue they've just created and putting the info into excel. I'm 2/3rds of the way through and have found loads of errors, i don't think the proof-reading in here is up to much, perhaps that should be my new career.
The website i've been updating had only been updated once in 2 years so it is long overdue an update but they'll need to promote it heavily if anyone is ever going to use it.

re:designing their new site. As i say i do have a lot of boring work to do and then if i was to design something myself to show to my boss i'd need to work on this once i get home and usually when i get home after over 8 hours of work all i want to do is to vegetate in front of the computer.

Hi Mark
I say shit in the fridge and pour milk down the toilet. Then your boss will know you're not happy.
Looking forward to being northward bound...
