Electronic Music other: Great Guitarists
Written June 12 2007 , Tags: Guitar, teh Love of, 6 string
Many of you play the guitar, aspire to play the guitar, study the guitar, etc. I love the fucking thing and I'd like to know who your most beloved or otherwise inspirational guitar players are.
Also, include any technical, effects, and educational practices in the discussion if you like.
Here are some of mine:
The Legendary Segovia
I meant gilberto gil...duh
ian mckaye and guy piccioto (together)
ed o'brien, thom yorke and jonny greenwood (together)
ira kaplan (yo la tengo)
doug martsch (built to spill)
pastels, though i never know who is playing at what moment.
Dylan Carlson (Earth)
Wata/Takeshi from Boris (they're both fucking amazing)
I"m guessing the mystery Brazilian is Baden Powell.
Or Luiz Bonfá.
Yeah, Joao Gilberto... is that the Gilberto you were talking aboot?
omg, Baden Powell is amazing, yo, check his ass out! link
Favs for me in no order: John Squire, Bernard Butler, Slash, Jimmy Page, Eddie VH, the guy from Blur, the guy from Verve, Tommy Iomi
I like to keep my fav left-field guitarist separate from the all time favs, because to me it's like comparing best guitarist with best accordionists... but they are: Neil Halstead (Slowdive years), Mr. Shields, Mark Clifford, Sonic Youth, Robin Guthrie
word to Shields, Clifford and Guthrie.
hmm. wow. I barely know any of the other guitarists.
I always liked Kim Thayil....amusingly I can't remember any of his riffs now.
- japanese 58' reissue Strat trough a Zvex Super Hard On -> Audiomulch -> Marshall Studio 15
- If i was no lucky Studio 15 owner, i'd get an Epiphone Valve Junior
- Fingerpicking !
- David Pajo
- Loren MazzaCane Connors
- John Fahey
- Leo Kottke
- Izzy Stradlins playing on 'Appetite for Destruction' . Slash is pretty amazing on that one too.
- 'Black Mountain Side' on Led Zeppelin 1
and not to forget
and of course
paco de lucia is spanish.. but he's actually my second fav guitarist hehe.
Tech specs: 1979 es-175 through a '65 twin reverb, modified korean squire, handmade classical guitar from the studio of "lucida artista"
Extra tools/effects/toys depend heavily on what genre I'm playing, who I'm playing with, and how lazy I'm feeling.
My allstar players list:
-the assad brothers
-billy corgan (yeah, that's right)
-pat martino's early stuff
I respect a lot of guitar/laptop guys as musicians, but not necessarily as guitarists. When Fennesz, tsukimono, kfw, fourcolor, rafael toral etc release non-processed tracks, they'll be candidates for my list ;)
adam pierce and dan lippel (mice parade) are magical in this video.
For me it would be jimi hendrix, charlie christian, django reinhardt, steve vai. Funnily I don't like guitar that much heh
