Favs for me in no order: John Squire, Bernard Butler, Slash, Jimmy Page, Eddie VH, the guy from Blur, the guy from Verve, Tommy Iomi I like to keep my fav left-field guitarist separate from the all time favs, because to me it's like comparing best guitarist with best accordionists... but they are: Neil Halstead (Slowdive years), Mr. Shields, Mark Clifford, Sonic Youth, Robin Guthrie word to Shields, Clifford and Guthrie.

Extra tools/effects/toys depend heavily on what genre I'm playing, who I'm playing with, and how lazy I'm feeling. My allstar players list: -joe pass -AGATA!!! -kaki king -ben monder -the assad brothers -billy corgan (yeah, that's right) -julian bream -gary smith -pat martino's early stuff -Pete McAnn -rhys chatham I respect a lot of guitar/laptop guys as musicians, but not necessarily as guitarists. When Fennesz, tsukimono, kfw, fourcolor, rafael toral etc release non-processed tracks, they'll be candidates for my list ;) adam pierce and dan lippel (mice parade) are magical in this video.
