tom morello?
his work on the first to rage against the machine albums was amazing imo. really unique. so different at the time that the band had to put a disclaimer in the liner notes "no synths samplers or turntables were used on this record."

Bert Jansch is my favourite; he has the best combination of technical ability and songwriting skillz. Also, Nick Drake, Leo Kottke (My favourite 'guitar' album is 6 & 12 string guitar by Leo Kottke), John Fahey, John Renbourn.
I've seen Tommy Emmanuel live and it was mind blowing how technically good he was, but his studio stuff tends to be bland, over-produced guff.

good call on tom morello. the rage albums are some of the few 90's rock that i haven't gotten rid of yet. but audioslave smelled funny.

for the record...segovia helped popularize classical guitar in the states, but his technique and sound were relatively poor. There are lot's of string squeaks and clicking of fingernails on strings and buzzes, etc, which is kind of like classical guitar blasphemy, and his tone isn't nearly as lush as it could have been. Not that I'm hating...dude certainly has street cred, but he tends to ellicit groans from serious classical guitarists.
