my studio pc is just that. a pc for my studio.
the only things i ever (and will ever) use it for are audio apps, a
tiny bit of photoshop, playing/burning cds/dvds/mp3s and such.
i never do anything else on it. it never has and never will go on the net or play games.
im sick of windows. it pisses me off. sometimes it seems to change
my settings for no reason.
the other day it started making the 'computer beep' noise every time a
warning or message pops up or you click an inactive area....i mean the one that
comes from INSIDE your computer not through your speakers. its really
starting to get annoying and i cant find how you turn it off.
when playing files back from cd/dvd (sound and video) the sound
totally screws up like its being run through a bit reduction
plugin.....like when you set the latency too low in an audio app and
it goes all distorted and glitchy. sometimes its ok for 10 - 30
seconds... then it goes all screwy. CPU usage looks fine and running
stupidly big cubase files doesnt even make it flinch....yet playing a
5mb mp3 from a cd makes it go all freaky. ive never had problems with the soundcard drivers either.....they work fine for everything else.
this plus all the other crap that comes with windows just makes it not
worth the hassle for me.
id get a mac but i dont want to turn into an delusional arrogant prick ;)
(incase you didnt notice that ^^^ was a joke) i dont really like OSX either.
its annoying and has it own little quirks.
ive been looking at ubuntu studio but im affraid it will get a bit complicated to install and partition my drives and stuff....id like to keep all my windows stuff intact. BUT there are already 4 drives in my pc (3 in a raid array and 1 system drive) i wouldnt really like to put any more in there so id have to partition the system drive to install the new OS .... would that mean deleting some of the data on the system drive?
....and im not sure what progs are compatible/available for it either.
how is WINE? is it a CPU hog? unstable?
i mainly use reason, cubase, energyXT, live, recycle and some vsts. also photoshop.
im no programmer either so id like to just set it up, configure and go without even thinking about the OS. i dont want to keep having to do stuff to maintain it.
im running AMDx64 4800+ with a XFX revo64 serial ata card ... which is pretty cool cos it doesnt need drivers....i think that would be the case for using it with ubuntu too....but im not sure.
also i have an maudio 1814 for which only win/osx drivers are available for....i can see that being a problem.
what other options do i have?
am i stuck with winblows?
help?
thanks guys and gals
x
[EDIT]
PLEASE DO DO NOT SUGGEST OSX!!!
IVE USED IT FOR 4 YEARS AND DO NOT PARTICULARLY LIKE IT!!!
I AM NOT SWITCHING TO OSX. END OF!
thanks. and sorry for shouting.

linux works for audio or dump computers altogether and start building a hardware setup.

@ bitbare
its ignorant people like you that have to keep these computer wars going. Its also a shame you've been brainwashed by the almighty Apple into thinking that "they are the greatest"
almost makes me think twice about buying my mac and worry about getting brainwashed.
so F off bitbare. EM411 and even the world doesnt need people like you. your a damn shame to Apple.

LOL dont listen to that nob
he is the local troll P A W E L under a new name.
cheers for the info guys.
ive already got a hardware setup but i like to use a mixture of the two. it would be very hard and time consuming using only hardware do the sort of stuff i want to do.
i guess what im really asking is...
i use mainly reason, cubase, energyXT, live, recycle and some vsts oh and tx81z editor.....will linux or ubuntu run these?
is it a pain the the arse to set up and maintain linux or ubuntu studio? will i be constantly running into problems?
how will i get my soundcard to work if there are no linux drivers for it? (not on the maudio site anyway)
if i set up linux on a seperate partition of my existing system drive....will i lose all the data already on the drive whan i create a new partition?

just stay at where you are at kris.
every os has its flaws. and some like it more this or that way.
you want energy xt for example? so just stay at windows. just ignore the friggin flaws.
as you mentioned, maybe just install a linux system on some partition.
computers suck. that's it.
some more some less. but even this depends on the poeple using it.

sounds like your DVD-rom is having read issues, buffer issues or you have other devices on the same IDE that are hogging it.

You may want to give Linspire link a look or even Freespire (the totally free version) link
I've personally used Freespire ( and plan on fully switching to it soon) and it's pretty nice. Detected my onboard audio, and a couple different usb soundcards fine. Even set up my nvidia gfx card correctly. The interface is made with WinXP refugees in mind, I found it quite nice.
