sigh.
Just watched "Sicko", the new Michael Moore film about healthcare in the U.S. Amazingly depressing and angering. But very good. It may not be up too much longer, so watch it while you can.
Love,
Shaun

Though better than the USA, Canada does not have free health care for everyone, and is far from perfect (6 weeks to 2 years wait time for surgeries).

So I've heard that socialist medicine can be a failure, but that's just hearsay to me. Can anyone living in one of those countries confirm or deny any of the points addressed in the movie?

we certainly have it good here in the uk but (new) labour are doing everything thay can to ruin that. all the hospitals are saying they just need more nurses and all the government are doing is employing more managers and consultants. dicks.
you go to hospital in the uk and you probably leave sicker than when you went in - they employ cheap contractors to do the cleaning who just use chemicals that breed resistant strains of bacteria. hospitals were cleaner years ago because they just got on their knees with soap and scrubbed properly, these days it's all about cutting costs.

Theres more shit than that going on with hospital:
they use outsourced suppliers for stuff - I used to work for a desktop hardware supplier back in 2001 @ central london hospital trust in London. The guy used to buy up P3 1Ghz machine parts for about £300 then flog them to the hospital trust for £1400. He would pay me £15k/pa but expect me to install 8 or more machines a day.
I ended up smoking about 40-50 rollups a day and through the stress of my cuntface of a boss, seeing sick people go without because of lack of funds and hearing nurses talk about not being able to survive on their wages in london so they were considering a job change, I had my second pneumathorax [1st was in 96 but same lung]. He sacked me when I was off sick and could get away with it because I was still in my probationary period.
The cleaners used at the hospital were mostly minimum wage africans who also did at least one other job. You could see them walking around, looking knackered. Too knackered to care if they had no pride in their work. I kept finding one guy asleep in a particular cupboard all the time because he was working a late evening job as well.
The trust [at the time] was having a new building constructed for them [its been finished a while now]. Its a PFI construct meaning that they would have had to give up all their old estates/buildings as a part of the deal [all prime locations in central london - about 10-12 sites in all] and yet will still have to pay for 'servicing' to teh PFI company for 25-30 years. At the end of the contract term, they will have the 'option' to either buy the building from the PFI firm or to leave it. So they have paid twice for the building and surrrendered their old properties as a part of the 'deal'.
Because of this complete fucking treachery by the cunts who call themselves 'Labour', the NHS will be completely bankrupt by, if not before [a lot of hospitals are now in funding crisis], 20 years time.
The same applies to any public scheme that has used PFI: schools, libraries, swimming pools & leisure centres, etc etc.

this is what happends where every required service is put out to tender... my current company won't touch the nhs (and many other government organisations) as it's just not worth the time or bother - why waste more than 6 months tendering for an nhs contract when you can deal with a private organisation and get more money for less hassle? (and a turn-around of under a month from the first lead to contract)

totally - also with the hospital is that changing a lightbulb went from a 5 min job to a 3 day job and could cost from £40 [health & safety implications of user doing it, time & labour charge for workman, scheduling time in for it, bringing safety equiptment and steps to reach bulb, etc].
It was fucing ludicrous and yet, as you already pointed out, there was always new faces popping up in middle management or management consultants. [another word for snake oil salesmen]

the starting salary for a nurse is £16000 - you can get more than that doing data inputting through an agency.

It sounds like the problem lies with the government getting their shit together and making sure things run smoothly and putting the appropriate changes in place, but what it sounds like is if that were to happen, then the free medical thing would work out nicely
